134 cover Chattanooga Type 2 imageChattanooga Straightline Union Army Provisional Field Cancel Type 2, blue "Chattanooga Tenn. December 23, 1863" first day of use of the Type 2 cancel ties 1861 3¢ rose (Scott 65) on cover with "Go no more at present from Strawberry Plains" at left to Mrs. Jas. Ranson with original letter written by her soldier son Corporal William H. Ranson of Company K in the 27th Illinois Infantry and datelined "Strawberry Plans East Tenn. Dec. 21st / 63" and reads in part, "Dear Mother and Father, Once more by a kind Providence I am allowed a small sheet of paper and a few moments of time to write you a few lines. I wrote you a few lines immediately after the battle of Mission Ridge while at Chattanooga. On the 28th Nov. three days after the battle, we left that place and by the 8th inst, we performed a forced march of near 150 miles to Knoxville. Here we went into camp either for we have not been in tents or had anything of the kind along, since leaving Chattanooga. But we staid (sic) in the timber close by Knoxville until midnight of the 14th when we went aboard the (railroad) cars and was landed at a depot about 4 miles from this place. There we fried a little corn meal and meat and took breakfast and at break of day, we marched to this place. We will probably move a short distance in the morning as we have burnt up all the timber near our present position. Burnside's troops (our present advance) is about 17 miles ahead of us and we (Sheridan's Div.) lay about that distance northeast of Knoxville. It is useless to send anything more by express to us boys in the army for from all appearance we will be kept on the move pretty much all winter. The Chattanooga and Richmond railroad is being repaired as fast as we get possession of it, and as soon as supplies can be gotten up to us, we will in all probability move forward toward Virginia. This is the last year of our service and they will be likely to get all they can out of us while they have us…Our time will be up in 8 months and the Government can only hold us 90 days longer if they need us ever so bad then if we are spared we will be willing to take a short furlow. We have had no letters nor seen any newspapers for nearly one month. We have had no chance to draw clothing since the battle of Chicamanga, yet considering the cold weather, we have suffered but little for want of them…The mail goes out at 4 o'clock and I am informed that there will probably be no more mail go out for 2 weeks, hence I write in a hurry…", Very Fine, Type 2 cancellation was used from Dec. 23 to Dec. 31, 1863, and features the "D" in "December" below the "HA" in "Chattanooga". It is without frame., ex-Cate (with his green "JCC" backstamp) and accompanied by his exhibit page.
