241 cover Ohio Sandusky West House imageWest House (Hotel) - Sandusky, Ohio - Temporary Parole Site, Hand-carried cover and letter from Col. Trusten Polk, a paroled prisoner at West House, to Capt. John J. Miller, a P.O.W. at Johnson's lsland, Ohio; the letter is datelined "West House", Sandusky, O., Dec 30, 1863., Very Fine. The only recorded P.O.W. correspondence to or from this facility.


Miller, a medical student, who was just one course short of completing his studies, had been treating Polk in prison. Col. Polk, former Governor of Missouri and former U.S. Senator, had been paroled to the city as authorities feared he was near death due to his delicate state of health. In the letter, Polk writes of being released, but is "fearful about the effect of exposure upon my diseased organ" during the long journey home.

244 cover Virginia Fort Monroe Hygia Hotel imageHygia Hotel - Fort Monroe, Va. - Temporary Parole Site, Cover from Capt. Robert H. Archer, AAG of J.J. Archer's Brigade, a P.O.W. temporarily held at the Hygia Hotel while in transit from Johnson's Island to Richmond for exchange. He was given temporary parole to the Hygia on Jan. 11, 1865. He used an envelope with a corner card of Fort Monroe's "Office Assistant Agent for Exchange" to send a letter to his daughter in Baltimore; franked with a 3¢ rose tied by a neat quartered cork cancel and postmarked by a Jan 14 Old Point Comfort, Va. c.d.s. He was at the Hygia less than ten days, Very Fine. The only recorded correspondence to or from a P.O.W. housed at this temporary parole facility.


An included photocopy of Archer's service file shows him transferred to Fort Monroe on Jan 11, 1865. It also shows that he had been captured at Mercersburg, Va. on Jul 5, 1863.
