lithograph was tied by a Jun 29, 1862 c.d.s.; manuscript "Examined, Robt Thompson, Lieut Col 115 Pa Vols, Provost Marshal" by the officer in charge of the guard unit at Camp Curtin; reduced slightly at the right, Fine to Very Fine. The
only recorded P.O.W. cover to or from this facility—additionally, fewer than a dozen of the five-cent blue lithographed are recorded on P.O.W. mail.
A photocopy of a page from Hite's record shows that he was captured at
Newtown, Va. on June 11, 1862, and held for two weeks at Harrisburg, Pa. before being moved from Camp Curtin to Fort Delaware by Lt. Col. Thompson on June 26. On August 26 of that same year, Hite was released as part of a prisoner exchange.

Bradburn was one of the "Immortal 600", sent to the hospital at Beaufort, S.C. before the others were placed under fire on Morris Island. A photocopy of the page recording his admission to the hospital notes
that he was captured at Port Hudson, La. on July 9, 1863 and that "All this list of Prisoners…are part of the Six Hundred sent from Fort Delaware for Morris Island" .

Prison Ship U.S.S. Dragoon - Off Hilton Head, S.C., Cover and letter from Col. W.H. Forney, 10th Alabama (Infantry), one of the 50 Confederate officers brought from Fort Delaware to be placed under fire on Morris Island,
Charleston S.C., to his wife in Jacksonville, Ala.; sent unfranked with Charleston S.C. c.d.s., Aug 2 (1864) a handstamped "PAID/10" for C.S.A. postage; censors' manuscript "Exd E.N.S." and "Appd N. Soule Cpt aag".
The letter,
which has been completely separated into six pieces and hinged back together - the sixth piece missing - is Forney's handwritten list of "Names of the fifty Confederate Officers sent from Ft. Delaware to be placed under fire in retaliation for
the fifty Union Officers confined in the City of Charleston". 47 names are listed, Forney being number 48. The last two are presumably on the missing piece of the letter. Fine to Very Fine, signed B. Green.

Delaware to be placed under fire at Morris Island, Charleston S.C.; addressed to Forney, "Prisoner of War at or near Cummings Point, Charleston Harbor, S.C."; Fort Delaware examiner's "Prisoner's Letter" oval handstamp and Delaware City, Del. c.d.s.,
Jul 27 (1864). Forney was exchanged Aug 2, so the cover was forwarded through the lines to Charleston, S.C. where it was handstamped "Paid/10" and manuscript "Chge Box 392 H.W.F. all AAG"; forwarded a second to Jacksonville, Ala.; U.S. stamp removed
at exchange point, opened roughly at the right, Fine. One of just five known from the Dragoon.
The 50 officers were held aboard the Dragoon for 31 days before being exchanged for the 50 Union officers who had been held
under fire in the city of Charleston S.C.

entered C.S.A. mails about Feb. 23rd (partial Burnsville c.d.s. with the stamp missing); it went from Burnsville to Tibbee Station on the Mobile & Ohio R.R.; censor's manuscript "Examined by, Lt. H. Wilson, 20th Regt, 0.V.U.S.A."; top flap
sewn shut with brown thread; edge wear, Fine to Very Fine. The only recorded P.O.W. usage from here; and the only one with a sewn flap.
Prisoners were held several days at Fort Donelson before being sent farther north.

Sullins was a Methodist Minister at Athens, Tenn.; notice of his incarceration as a hostage appeared in the Richmond Daily Dispatch on July 22, 1864. J.S. Van Gilder was a manufacturer, banker, postmaster and Mayor of Knoxville.
