The Tombs Prison - New York City, Hand-carried cover to John Harleston, Executive Officer of the Savannah, a Confederate Privateer; addressed to simply "Mr. Harleston, No 6, New Prison" to which someone along the way added "Tombs
NY" ["New Prison" being another name by which the prison was known]. Included is a likeness of the original letter, which now resides in the South Carolina Historical Society. It is datelined New York, Dec 20th, 1861, and is from Sabina Wells,
formerly of Charleston, S.C. detailing personal loss from the so-called Great Charleston Fire of 1861, Fine to Very Fine. Only five Tombs P.O.W. covers are recorded.
When the Savannah was captured in June 1861,
Harleston was tried as a pirate and confined in Tombs Prison.

Morey's mother enclosed a clipping from a N.Y. paper that makes conditions for prisoners on the island sound almost idyllic, in part,
"The rations received by the rebels is about the same as furnished our own soldiers, and consists of fresh beef boiled, bread and soup. The principal pastime. consists of whittling out gutta percha rings inlaying them with silver, making fans and
screens, all of which they sell for sufficient money to procure tobacco and other luxuries." .

Included is the original letter datelined Walden, Mass., June 9, 1865, from Morey's mother who relays the good news that she has just received the official form for the release of
prisoners of war. Then she passes along the bad news that she had had her purse snatched as she was boarding the train in Boston. In it was "$30.00 and a business paper worth six hundred." She thinks she "can prevent the rogue using the paper,
and perhaps catch him by the same attempt."
Also included is a small newspaper clipping noting that "The Commissary General of Prisoners is overwhelmed with applications for the discharge of rebel prisoners of war upon taking the oath" .

capture of, Fort Fisher.

Lunatic Asylum - Columbus, Ohio, Twice-forwarded cover and enclosed letter to Lt. William Wilson [89th Va. Militia]; franked with a 3¢ rose tied by a Williamsport Md. c.d.s., Apr 6 (1862) and sent originally to Camp Chase with
examiner's "Ex Gray" and "2" & "5" in pencil, not found at Camp Chase, so forwarded to Johnson's Island, Sandusky, O. with a May 17 Sandusky c.d.s. and handstamped "DUE 3" used to send it back to Columbus to the Lunatic Asylum;
soiled an damp stained, the stamp with worm damage. The only reported usage to the Lunatic Asylum.
The Official Records note that the Lunatic Asylum was used from time to time to house "indigent" prisoners who were as
a form of parole.
In the long, partly damp stained letter, Wilson's wife writes of her intention to sell their home and move herself and her children to Ohio to be near her husband.
