Ailstock had become a "Galvanized Yankee", taken the Oath of Allegiance and joined the Union Army. In June of 1864, he was on guard duty in Norfolk, Va.

The second latest recorded use of this marking.

The second cover is an Adversity usage, made of wrapping paper, from Hill's mother in occupied Richmond to the prison via Old Point Comfort, with a 3¢ rose tied by a quartered cork cancel alongside an Apr 30th Old Point Comfort c.d.s.; marked with the manuscript examiner's "G" at the prison.


After the war, William Maury Hill became a very successful, nationally known Banker. Included are two newspaper obituaries from January 1918.

Mason and fellow C.S.A. diplomat, John Slidell, were confined at Fort Warren after being captured at sea in what became known as the "Trent Affair", so-named after the British mail packet, R.M.S.
Trent, upon which they were bound for Britain and France to press the Confederacy's case for diplomatic recognition. The Trent was captured by the U.S.S. San Jacinto, commanded by Capt. Charles Wilkes. The incident caused a great diplomatic furor in Britain, threatening diplomatic relations between the United States and the United Kingdom. President Lincoln and his advisors, not wanting to risk war with Britain, disavowed Captain Wilkes's actions and released Mason and Slidell, who resumed their voyage to Britain but failed in achieving diplomatic recognition. 112 cover St. Louis Marine Hospital imageMarine Hospital - St. Louis, Mo., Small cover addressed to to "Lieut Paul L. de Clouet [Co. G, Orleans Guards Regiment], Marine Hospital, St Louis, Mo", apparently hand-carried from his brother, also a P.O.W., at nearby Gratiot Street Prison. Included is a photocopy of a page from the hospital's records showing de Clouet's admission (Apr 19) and discharge ("Sent to prison Apr 25 /62") dates from the Hospital, his "complaint" being "Gun Shot", Very Fine.


THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED P.O.W. COVER TO OR FROM THE ST. LOUIS MARINE HOSPITAL.

There was originally an enclosure [not present] headed, "McDowell's College Prison, St. Louis, 21st April 1862", from his brother, Sgt. Alex de Clouet, a P.O.W. at what was known as Gratiot Street Prison. The brothers were captured April 7, 1862, as Alex tried to help his wounded brother from the Battlefield at Shiloh, Tenn. Lieut. de Clouet, of the Orleans Guards, was at the newly opened Marine Hospital for only seven days before he was sent to prison. Only known.

Lt. Keiley was injured at the Battle of Malvern Hill in 1862. After recovering from his wounds, he joined Lee during the Gettysburg Campaign before resigning his commission to join the Virginia House of Delegates. He was captured - as a civilian - by Union forces near Petersburg in June 1864. when "every able-bodied man" was called to repel Union attack led by Gen. Benjamin Butler.

At Elmira, Keiley kept the Book of the Dead. He later wrote
In Vinculius, the Prisoner of War by a Virginia Confederate. After the war, he founded a newspaper, was elected Mayor of Richmond, and was named by President Grover Cleveland to diplomatic posts in both Italy and Austria-Hungary. (Image) (Image2)
