558 64a image1861, 3¢ pigeon blood pink (Scott 64a), a magnificent cover, franked by three Pigeon Bloods (a single and a pair), plus a 1¢ blue (#63), paying the 10¢ rate from Boston to Montreal; all stamps cancelled or tied by straightline framed PAID handstamps, the 3¢ stamps also tied by a double-ring "Boston/Feb/16/Mass" postmark in red; front additionally shows a fancy oval "United/States" handstamp at left; "Montreal/SEP 17/1861" receiver (next-day!) on reverse; accompanying certificate notes the left 3¢ stamp with some toned perforations, the right 3¢ stamp with a large diagonal tear at bottom—minor, really, when you consider Scott values a single on cover at $5,000, Very Fine cover and usage, with 2005 P.F. certificate. 559 65 image1861, 3¢ rose (Scott 65), lightly tied by a target cancel on a 3¢ "Star Die" entire (U26) to New York City postmarked with a partial New Orleans double circle datestamp and a perfect strike of the rare "ILLEGAL STAMP" straightline handstamp with no indication of what the illegal stamp may have been - presumably a 3¢ 1857 - nor any trace of where it had been affixed; the cover and stamp are damaged at the lower left and a piece (the name of the sender?) has been cut out of the back; nonetheless, an exceedingly rare usage of the New Orleans ILLEGAL STAMP marking - fewer than 10 examples are recorded - and a true philatelic mystery,

According to Simpson, New Orleans used this marking beginning in December 1863
