1349   imageS S Leviathan Catapult Collection, 1927-29, extraordinary collection of covers, photographs, and postcards related to experimental ship-to-shore catapult mail; while aircraft of the era did not have the capacity to routinely fly the Atlantic, it was recognized that a plane launched from an ocean liner en route could permit mail to arrive a day sooner by air than waiting on the ship; pair of Roessler envelopes marked FIRST AIRMAIL Steamer to Shore USS Leviathan off Fire Island, one is boldly signed by the pilot Clarence D Chamberlin, both backstamped Hasbrouck Heights NJ; an arrival date Hasbrouck Heights to Hoboken covers in annotated, "1st Air Mail to the United States from SS Leviathan by CD Chamberlin" in the pilot's handwriting; 3x5 photograph from a nurse on the ship in 1927 of Chamberlin in his airplane ready for launch on the catapult deck of the Leviathan; two dozen vintage postcards of the ship underway; stereocard of the Leviathan in the Hudson River sometime after the post Great War upgrade to serve as an American passenger liner; abstract from Voyage #12 East from New York to Southampton via Cherbourg in 1924 on the reverse of a postcard sized picture with location, miles traveled, and remarks about the weather; 12 real photo postcards showing various aspects of the deck and hull, other sepia photos of the interior further expand the story; three Adams Air Mail Pick-Up covers (one printed blue to the ship, and two rubber stamp (one red and one blue from the ship) from the 1929 attempt which was postponed, included is a letter on United States Lines stationery describing the catapult mail system; a historic lot, Fine to Very Fine.
