902 og   image1971-76, Independent Postal Service of America, Accumulation, three different groups: 1.) the 1971 First Issue of five values printed by British printer, Thomas De La Rue & Co.: 194 complete mint sets in sheets and part sheets, also a cacheted First Day cover of the 5¢ value dated Nov 30, 1971; 2.) the 1976 Unissued set of six pictorial values: 85 mint sets in part-sheets of 50 & 35 (one of the values, a "0¢" denomination, pictures the founder, Thomas M. Murphy, and is overprinted "Write Your Congressman"); and 3.) Imperforate singles of the Unissued set mounted as proofs on a thick gray card. plus a second card with only the "0¢" imperf (each the two "0¢" proofs are overprinted "Write Your Congressman" in a different style/location); a most unusual group.

The Independent Postal System of America was formed as a delivery service for parcels and bulk mail and later attempted first class mail delivery. The Post Office Department and the Mail Carrier's Union took issue with this and endless lawsuits ensued, eventually causing the company to go bankrupt.
