White II, Astronaut, signature in black ink on 8c Goddard unaddressed Artcraft cacheted first day cover, Extremely Fine, Ed White was an American astronaut best known for being the first American to walk in space during the Gemini IV mission in June 1965. He was selected as the senior pilot for the Apollo 1 mission, which never happened due to an accidental fire during a launch rehearsal test that destroyed the module and killed all three astronauts on board.
