BLACK OVERPRINT: 'V.' on De La Rue Crown/SA Rouletted 2d deep dull red-orange SG DO581 (very fine with rouletting on all sides, Cat
£500) tied by GPO cds of 'JY20/70' to plain cover endorsed "OHMS" & used locally, the address beginning "Sergt Major" partly erased resulting in a central fault, light overall soiling. The stamp is rated RR. Ex Rev James Mursell and Don Pearce: sold
for $1475 (Sale 247 Lot 840). Number 3 in Anthony Presgrave's Census of five 'V.' covers, and illustrated by Ron Butler at page 148.
The long 'Tamiami' cover, with the stamp inverted & the address partly erased, sold for $1377. The two 'Besancon' covers - the first with address similarly defaced - sold for SFr905 & SFr1205 respectively. The source of the covers with erased
addresses is hinted at by Rev Mursell's pencil endorsement on the reverse: "Fry Wirrega SA/Jan 1934". Wirrega is a railway stopping place 20km NW of Bordertown. (Image1) (Image2)

BLACK OVERPRINT: 'V.' on De La Rue Crown/SA Rouletted 2d pale orange SG DO581 (Cat £500; Rated RR; unrecorded unused), tied to OHMS
cover with 'Volunteer Military Force Staff Office/Adelaide' imprint at lower-left by GPO cds of 'NO11/69', used locally to "Sergeant [name neatly abraded]/Adelaide Artillery", two vertical folds. Ex Rev James Mursell. Number 1 in Anthony Presgrave's
Census of five 'V.' covers. The two 'Besancon' covers - the first with address similarly defaced - sold for SFr905 & SFr1205 respectively. Don Pearce's similar cover sold for $1475 (Sale 247 Lot 840). The long 'Tamiami' cover, with the stamp inverted
& the address partly erased, sold for $1355 (Sale 236 Lot 703).
Fun fact: Anthony Presgrave has advised that this was the first Departmental cover he obtained. It was sold at a Sydney auction but was returned because of the undescribed folds! (Image1) (Image2)

F |
BLACK OVERPRINT: 'VN.' on QV Perkins Bacon Large Star Wmk Irregular Compound Perf 10x11½-12½ x11½-12½x11½-12½ 4d deep purple SG
DO587, well-centred, irregular perfs at the sides and the upper-left corner is missing but clear of the design and otherwise sound, light GPO cds of 'SP4/73', Cat £20,000. Rated RRRRRR but one other example has been recorded in private hands so it
should be rated RRRRR: unrecorded unused. The very fine Bernhard Forster/Don Pearce/James Halliday example - graded 'A-' - sold for $34,740 (Sale 247 Lot 834) & $52,800 (Sale 262 Lot 766). [Date range 4.9.1873 to 28.9.1873]
This is the Holy Grail for collectors of the South Australian Departmentals. Four examples have been recorded. Reverend EP Raynor owned an example: it has not been seen since 1965 and may no longer be extant. The location of AE Fryar's example -
offered in a mixed lot (!) - is not known. That leaves only two stamps confirmed in private hands.
NB: The two recorded Perf 10 examples - Ex Rev James Mursell and in the institutionalised Sir George Murray collection - are generally considered to be of improbable authenticity. Ron Butler noted the existence of 2d & 4d stamps with a 'V.N.'
overprint and suggests they had been discredited. The 'V.N.' Perf 10 4d in Colonel Napier (III) was unsold, strongly suggesting that no potential buyer accepted its bona fides, despite it having a clear RPSL Certificate. Its current whereaouts are
also unknown. (Image1)

VALUATOR OF RUNS (?)

G |
BLACK OVERPRINT: 'VA.' on De La Rue Crown/SA Wmk Perf 10 2d dull orange SG DO585, significant damage at the top, GPO cds of
'AP9/73', Cat £7500; unpriced unused. Rated RRRRR: unrecorded unused. One of the most elusive of all the Departmental Overprints. Ex Don Pearce: sold for $5425, against our intentionally conservative estimate of $500. [The only date recorded by Don
Pearce]
The ultimate enigma: we have listed this stamp under 'Valuator of Runs' only because that was Ron Butler's final guess, and we need to put it somewhere! Frankly, none of the suggestions of MP Castle, Reverend PE Raynor and George Blockey are
convincing. Only a couple of examples have been recorded - including in Rev Mursell's collection - and of themselves they offer no solution to the conundrum. No official statement on the subject has been found and, in the government's 1871 list of
users of Departmentals, there was no candidate for 'VA'. That list also advised that any typesetting errors should be used-up as normal stamps.
The situation is complicated by the absence of a stop after the 'V'. Certainly, this could have been an oversight on the part of the type-setter. However, 'V.A.' offers no more clarity than 'VA.' Could this be a case analogous to the mysterious
'I.E.'? Don Pearce believes 'I.E.' was a typsetting error for 'E.' Perhaps 'VA.' could be a typesetting error for 'V.' As with 'E.'+'I.E.', a setenant 'V.'+'VA.' multiple is needed to advance the argument. One thing that supports the error theory is
that both 'I.E.' and 'VA.' are of extreme rarity. That could be the result of an error in each case on one position in the forme. In both cases such an aberration should have been quickly identified and rectified. Whatever the case, nobody has
questioned the genuineness of the overprint. (Image1) (Image2)
