1921-28 KGV 'Star' with 'POSTAGE' 1d red Die 5 ACSC ES40 long-format envelope for 'The Mt. Lyell Mining & Railway Co' (Tasmania)
Melbourne office, used 1921 to Scotland with the flap at left unsealed and Melbourne '22DE/1921' machine cancel, light vertical fold clear of the value indicium & some minor blemishes, Cat $7500. The rate was 1d per 2oz British Empire printed matter.
Extremely rare: approval to include the word 'POSTAGE' on the 1d 'Star' Die was given in September 1921, at a time when the domestic letter rate was 2d per ½oz. The 1d denomination was intended for the printed matter rate, and the colour was changed
to violet from February 1922 (as was the colour of the corresponding KGV Heads stamp). The ACSC records only this user and 'The Australian Drug Co, Sydney' for the 1d red, and states that "Three examples have been recorded", this being the
equal-earliest recorded date of usage (see the next Lot). We have recorded one more example of this envelope - the flap missing - which sold at our auction of 15.8.2014 for $4830 (Sale 193 Lot 335). (Image1) (Image2)
