1918-25 KGV Sideface Scenic Issues 1½d imperforate proof in deep red-purple with 'CLIFTON GARDENS/ SYDNEY' (sailing boats) view on
ungummed uniform grey stock ACSC LC41P(1)B with one corner folded back to reveal the inside stock, 'AUSTRALIAN NOTE/AND STAMP PRINTER/("3")' cachet & 'DEC 18 1918' handstamp both in violet on the address panel, Cat $10,000. The admonition remained
unchanged, inadvertently referring to the 'penny rate of postage', which continued on the issued cards. The 'CLIFTON GARDENS' view was not used for the issued cards and exists only in this format, making it the rarest of all the views: only one other
example - a similar proof numbered "2" - is recorded. Ex John Sinfield. (Image1) (Image2)

Residual stocks of 2d Letter Cards were surcharged to meet the 1½d domestic letter rate introduced on 1.10.1923 only after the 1½d green cards had been issued. It is estimated that only forty 2d orange cards - across both stocks & perfs - were
overprinted. Remarkably five of those are known to have survived. (Image1) (Image2)

1916 KGV Sideface 1d red Second Issue with 'A.I.F., ABROAD' at Base on pale grey unsurfaced stock ACSC LCM2, to "Private Walter
Page, 18th R/A Company, Fourth Battalion" with 'AUBURN/14JA17/NSW' cds, light soiling, small surface abrasion at lower-left & minor repaired tear on the reverse, with lengthy message inside including "Did you get the two packages we sent? Did you get
the Treasury Bank Note we sent in a Registered Letter? ...", grossly under-catalogued at $2000. The ACSC states that "Only two used examples are recorded", and that no used examples of the earlier 'AUSTRALIAN IMPERIAL FORCE' at Base Letter Card are
known. More than 83,000 of the two issues combined were prepared, so it is remarkable that more than 100 years later only two should be known to have survived. Ex Tony Finlayson: sold at our auction of 14.11.2014 for $11,500. Private Page was killed
in battle in France later in 1917. (Image1) (Image2)
