1940 airmail cover to "Norfolk Island Chemical Depot/Norfolk Island/Via Sydney" with 9d Platypus tied by light but discernible
British 'FIELD POST OFFICE/245' cds in use with the 7th Armoured Division (The Desert Rats), superb boxed 'AERIAL SERVICE/COMPLETED SYDNEY' jusqu'a handstamp in violet & the airmail label crossed-out, minor blemishes. Outstanding origin-destination
cover. Sold at our auction of 30.4.2011 for $390 (Sale 164 Lot 767).
The de Chesne family arrived on Norfolk Island in the 20th century. We could find no contemporary reference to a chemical storage facility on the island during World War II, only comments that there was no such depot on Norfolk. (Image1) (Image2)
