6d ultramarine Die II ACSC 19 (SG 38) Plate 1 strip of 12 comprising the entire bottom row of the sheet including Inserted 'CA'
Monogram & Substituted 'CA' Monogram corner strips of 3 with both Monograms complete, White Flaws off WA Coast W of Port Hedland [Pos 1R55], White Flaw obliterating Port Philip Bay, Victoria [Pos 1R56], Retouched Shading Lines W of Cape Leeuwin, WA
[Pos 1R59] and Substituted Cliché Die IIA [Pos 1R60] ACSC 19(2)zf, remarkably fresh & generally very fine, the two left-hand units with minor bends, the outer-left unit with a small hinge remainder, a small hinge mark in the lower margin and four
other units with sensible perf reinforcing otherwise unmounted, Cat $67,500+ for mounted. Ex Jack Kilfoyle, Dr Leslie Abramovitch, Hugh Morgan - sold for £31,200 - and Peter O'Rourke sold in 2020 for $30,550 (when catalogued at $75,000; the ACSC
provides no explanation for the price reduction).
Unique in private hands: the ACSC states that "one mint strip of 12 from Plate 1 with CA monogram both sides ... exists, while of the similar strip from Plate 2 ... there are two examples, one in the Royal Collection and one in the ... Australia Post
Archival Collection" (that is, both other strips - neither of which include the Substituted Cliché - are in institutional collections).
When Harrison succeeded Cooke as Stamp Printer, he removed the Monograms from all plates except for his first printing of the 6d Kangaroo in June 1918 for which he replaced his predecessor's 'JBC' Monograms with additional 'CA' emblems. This is the
only Kangaroo printing to feature 'CA' Monograms both sides; for all later printings of all values including this one, Harrison replaced the Monograms with his own personal imprint. (Image1) (Image2)
