POSTAL HISTORY: 1855 stampless envelope to "Revd Henry Nisbet/Salatulafa/Savau" unusually fine, with the 4pp letter headed
"Saluafata 30 Dec 1855". The rather scandalous letter states "...your kind letter of 10th Nov found me at Malua...my island partner [!] has now gone to her rest & I am left desolate..." Friedrich Steuer Certificate (1992) states the letter is
unsigned. Our assessment is that is is signed but the autograph is illegible.

POSTAL HISTORY: 1868 lengthy entire letter "No 8" apparently from a native headed "Malua Samoa March 7th 1868" and signed "Ever
affec from Sonfe Tamu [?]" to "The Reverend Henry Nisbet of Samoa/.../Mission House.../Finsbury/London", carried privately to Sydney with NSW Diadems Perf 12 6d purple tied by ' E / JY6/1868/SYDNEY - NSW' duplex, London arrival cds of '11SP68' in
red on the face, ironed-out central vertical crease, some minor splits with internal reinforcing. Henry Nisbet was with the London Missionary Society. He first arrived in Samoa in -.8.1841, moving to Tanna in the New Hebrides in 1842. He returned to
Samoa in -.2.1843, remaining until he died in 1879. The website of the National Library of New Zealand states Nisbet visited Australia in 1854 and 1867-68, and England in 1869-70. From this letter, it appears he continued to England from Sydney and
was in London probably by late-1867.
The writer states "...No 6 sent by the Mild Wave [?] in Jany and No 7...left Apia 3 days ago in the French iron steamer Coltwyn [?] Capt Didit for New Caledonia and Sydney...had a nice meeting with 1000 of the people over the reopening of the new
chapel...Mr King...just returned from a visit round as far as Tamata [Papua?]..." and lots more interesting commentary. Several references to a "Mr Davis", possibly the operator of the private postal service from 1886. (Image1) (Image2)
