581 c image1855 (June) undated consignee's envelope to New York endorsed "p 'Tasmania' via Callao" with a very fine example of the rare 'FORWARDED BY/Burlingame & Co/Melbourne & New York' black/pink label affixed at lower-left, some tonespots on the reverse. Carried by private ship across the Pacific to Callao Peru, then to Panama City, by rail to Aspinwall, Colon (Panama's trans-isthmian railway opened 28.1.1855), then ship to New York. Burlingame & Co are listed in the 1855 Port Phillip Directory as "American Stove Merchants, at 87 Bourke Street E. and 25 A'Beckett Street, Melbourne". An important item bearing the only example we have seen of this label. Ex Dale Forster - sold at our auction of 21.5.2024 for $1380 with two enclosures dated "19 June 1855" that are no longer present (Sale 256 Lot 1149) - and John Barwis. (Image1) (Image2)

582 c image1856 (Aug 28) stampless OHMS entire letter to "The Paymaster of Police Melbourne" with fine 'PAID AT/STEIGLITZ' beveled-boxed handstamp rated "8d" on the face, fair crowned-oval 'STEIGLITZ/VICTORIA' backstamp and largely very fine Melbourne arrival of 'AU30/1856' alongside, a couple of very minor blemishes. 583 c image1857 (circa May) undated consignee's envelope to New York endorsed "p Saml Appleton" & "Care of Alsop & Co Callao" at lower-left with a largely very fine example of the rare 'FORWARDED BY/ROGERS CARRERE & Co/MELBOURNE' oval cachet on the back flap, New York 'STEAMSHIP/10/Cts' arrival on the face where re-addressed to Baltimore Maryland with 'JULY/13/1857' despatch datestamp and 'FORWARDED' handstamp also on the face, rated "3"[cents] domestic mail totalled to "13"[cents] including the inwards steamship charge, no arrival markings, minor transmission marks. Carried by private ship across the Pacific to Callao Peru where the "Care of ..." endorsement crossed-out, then to Panama City, by rail to Aspinwall (later Colon; railway opened 28.1.1855), then ship to New York. 584 c image1864 (Jan 26) envelope to New Jersey, USA with QV Octagonal 1/- blue and Emblems 2d grey-lilac (repaired faults) tied by Melbourne duplex cancels, London 'MR 17/64/PAID' cds transit in red on the face, carried by Trans-Atlantic Steamer service from England to Maine, USA with ' 5 /APR/1/1864/PORTLAND ME AM PKT' large cds on the face '16/CENTS' curved accountancy handstamp in red alongside for credit to USA , repaired edge faults & some restoration. Carried by P&O 'Bombay departing Melbourne 26.1.1864, 'Nubia' departing Galle, Ceylon 18.2.1864 to Suez and overland, then 'Pera' departing Alexandria 17.3.1864, and by Allan Line 'North American' departing Liverpool 17.3.1864. Scarce routing: carried by Panama, New Zealand & Australian Royal Mail Co 'Mataura' departing Melbourne 28.8.1867 arriving Panama 4.10.1867, then by 'Constitution' to San Francisco. 586 c image1868 (July 1) entire to "Messrs Rudolphe Camerer, a Mount Moriac pres Geelong, Victoria" (= at Mt Moriac near Geelong) with QV 6d tied by very fine London 'WC/36' duplex cancel, Melbourne cds arrival backstamp of 'AU3/68' in blue where very fine '6D/MORE TO PAY' handstamp also in blue applied on the face and Geelong unframed arrival of the same day on the reverse, light vertical fold clear of the adhesive & markings. Includes Union Bank of Australia (London) illustrated Letter of Credit 'DUPLICATE' for £90 payable at Geelong with GB Impressed Duty 'ONE/PENNY'. Scarce routing via Panama: carried by Panama New Zealand & Australian Royal Mail Packet 'Tasmania' via Jamaica, Panama & Wellington arriving Sydney 28.7.1868.
