1855 (June) undated consignee's envelope to New York endorsed "p 'Tasmania' via Callao" with a very fine example of the rare
'FORWARDED BY/Burlingame & Co/Melbourne & New York' black/pink label affixed at lower-left, some tonespots on the reverse. Carried by private ship across the Pacific to Callao Peru, then to Panama City, by rail to Aspinwall, Colon (Panama's
trans-isthmian railway opened 28.1.1855), then ship to New York. Burlingame & Co are listed in the 1855 Port Phillip Directory as "American Stove Merchants, at 87 Bourke Street E. and 25 A'Beckett Street, Melbourne". An important item bearing the
only example we have seen of this label. Ex Dale Forster - sold at our auction of 21.5.2024 for $1380 with two enclosures dated "19 June 1855" that are no longer present (Sale 256 Lot 1149) - and John Barwis. (Image1) (Image2)

with a largely very fine example of the rare 'FORWARDED BY/ROGERS CARRERE & Co/MELBOURNE' oval cachet on the back flap, New York 'STEAMSHIP/10/Cts' arrival on the face where re-addressed to Baltimore Maryland with 'JULY/13/1857' despatch datestamp
and 'FORWARDED' handstamp also on the face, rated "3"[cents] domestic mail totalled to "13"[cents] including the inwards steamship charge, no arrival markings, minor transmission marks. Carried by private ship across the Pacific to Callao Peru where
the "Care of ..." endorsement crossed-out, then to Panama City, by rail to Aspinwall (later Colon; railway opened 28.1.1855), then ship to New York. Ex Dale Forster - sold in 2020 for US$662 where stated to be the only recorded example of this
