4556 PSE image1937-51 KGVI Oval 1½d green ACSC ES79 window-face envelope for 'Burns Philp & Co South Sea Islands Tours' with illustration of cruise ship, outrigger canoe and palm trees on the face, used 1951 with Adelaide '2D/PAID' slogan machine cancel in red, a couple of very light bends. The printed matter rate had increased from 1½d per 4oz to 2d up to 4oz on 1.12.1950; the Paid cancel evidenced payment of the higher rate, the user presumably paying the additional ½d on account. The rate was 3d up to 1oz foreign letter plus ½d War Tax, with an apparent ½d convenience over-payment. The ACSC states that "Five used examples have been recorded .., one ... by the City of Geelong (Vic) on 8 February 1945 [this item; date error]". The rate was 1d per 4oz printed matter plus ½d War Tax plus ½d Permit Mail fee, which allowed printed matter to be sent in sealed envelopes. 4564 PSE image1937-51 KGVI Oval 2d bright mauve ACSC ES84 window-face envelope for 'Harris Scarfe Limited' with illustration of 'Rogers MM Paint' can on the face, used with Adelaide '13 DEC/1950' slogan machine cancel, a couple of very minor blemishes, Cat $800 in footnote 2. The ACSC states that the 2d mauve envelope was produced from the early-1940s to cater for the permit mail rate (sealed printed matter). When this rate was discontinued and the printed matter rate increased to 2d on 1.12.1950, the colour of the stamp indicium was to be changed to green, but this order was mistakenly printed in the discontinued colour. 4570 PSE image1937-51 KGVI Oval 2½d red + 2½d red Doubleton ACSC ES87 for Permit Mailer 'P.M.G. - P.M. 354' Roy Robbins, Turf Commission Agent (bookmaker) remarkably printed on 'Salvation Army/Australian Comfort Funds/YMCA' envelope with the Comfort Funds logos at lower-left barred-out, used 1948 airmail to "Mr L Barnett, Government Stores, Lae, New Guinea" with Melbourne cds cancel, redirected with "Not known Lae/try Rabaul" manuscript endorsement and 'RABAUL/10MR48/PAPUA-NEW GUINEA' cds on the face, then returned to Melbourne, small closed tear at upper right, minor transmission marks & blemishes, Cat $6000. Ex John Sinfield: sold at our auction of 20.11.2004 for $4370 (Sale 112 Lot 713) and Dubois (III): sold for SFr1464. The permit rate was 2d plus 3d per ½oz domestic airmail surcharge, the Territory of New Guinea being considered for postal purposes to be part of Australia. Although a KGVI Oval 5d Die was in use for Stamped-to-Order Registration Envelopes, this had the wording 'REGISTRATION' in the Die and was considered inappropriate for non-registered mail. Use of this rate must have been minimal, this item having survived because it was returned to the sender. The ACSC states that only "four used examples are recorded", but does not mention this item. The only economy re-use of Comfort Funds envelope stock that we have seen. (Image1) (Image2)
