1937-51 KGVI Oval 2½d red + 2½d red Doubleton ACSC ES87 for Permit Mailer 'P.M.G. - P.M. 354' Roy Robbins, Turf Commission Agent
(bookmaker) remarkably printed on 'Salvation Army/Australian Comfort Funds/YMCA' envelope with the Comfort Funds logos at lower-left barred-out, used 1948 airmail to "Mr L Barnett, Government Stores, Lae, New Guinea" with Melbourne cds cancel,
redirected with "Not known Lae/try Rabaul" manuscript endorsement and 'RABAUL/10MR48/PAPUA-NEW GUINEA' cds on the face, then returned to Melbourne, small closed tear at upper right, minor transmission marks & blemishes, Cat $6000. Ex John Sinfield:
sold at our auction of 20.11.2004 for $4370 (Sale 112 Lot 713) and Dubois (III): sold for SFr1464.
The permit rate was 2d plus 3d per ½oz domestic airmail surcharge, the Territory of New Guinea being considered for postal purposes to be part of Australia. Although a KGVI Oval 5d Die was in use for Stamped-to-Order Registration Envelopes, this had
the wording 'REGISTRATION' in the Die and was considered inappropriate for non-registered mail. Use of this rate must have been minimal, this item having survived because it was returned to the sender. The ACSC states that only "four used examples
are recorded", but does not mention this item. The only economy re-use of Comfort Funds envelope stock that we have seen. (Image1) (Image2)
