Vada Italy a day after being attacked by a German submarine on 18.3.1917 off the Sicilian coast, largely fine strike of 'DAMAGED BY IMMERSION/IN SEA WATER I.S.' boxed cachet in red on the face, some water stains & bends as to be expected. Jerry

Registered Alien No. 6886 Eduard Anton Colaco Belmonte to report his change of address, to "Aliens Registration Office, Russell Street Police Station, Melbourne", registered with KGV 1d red strip of 3 added tied by very fine 'MOONEE PONDS/VIC.' cds
cancels and red/white R label on the face, some pinholes & minor faults do not detract from the very fine facial appearance. A scarce registered usage, and an exceptional example of WWI "enemy alien" registration. Those permitted to remain in the
community "on licence" were required to report regularly to police, including any changes of address, and remained subject to internment at will: see Lot 4263 below. Belmonte was Dutch, so he should not have been treated as an enemy alien. (Image1) (Image2)

opened in the European fashion with the margins intact, 'UDEN/3.???/1920' arrival backstamp, a few minor blemishes. An extraordinary and entirely social but unauthorised external usage of Australian postal stationery from the Sisters of OLS Heart
Mission at Vuna Pope, New Britain, occupied German New Guinea (see also Lot 4291 below). The sender purported to pay additional postage, but this did not meet the foreign letter rate of 2½d plus ½d War Tax (in fact only 1d was legitimately paid, the
