1923 Surcharges Second Printing with Bars ¾mm Apart 'ONE/cent' on 10c bright blue SG 74 horizontal pair from the right of the
sheet, the left-hand unit with 'en' of 'Cent' Abraded by Hand & "Corrected" to 'Cnet' SG 74ca, hinge reinforcement, Cat £9180+ for singles; not priced as a setenant pair. Ex Dr William Wells. One of the strangest 'errors' of the entire British
Commonwealth.
According to William Wells - and essentially repeated by Gibbons in a footnote - the native compositor was instructed to make a 'true copy' of the first overprint forme. After the sheets were printed, he realised that the previous 'cnet' unit had
been corrected to 'cent', and apparently took it upon himself to carefully abrade the offending central letters and apply 'ne' in type by hand. The 'repair' is more heavily impressed and may be from a different font. Dr Wells stated "Fewer than
fifteen stamps exist with this variety". (Image1) (Image2)

1923 Surcharges Second Printing with Bars ¾mm Apart 'ONE/cent' on 10c bright blue SG 74 complete left-hand pane of 60 (6x10) with
Plate Number '1' in four positions, the fifth unit in the second last row (R9/5) with 'en' of 'Cent's Abraded by Hand & "Corrected" to 'Cnet' SG 74ca, some toning on the reverse but the 'error' is very fine, all but the last unit are unmounted, Cat
£19,600+ for singles; not priced as a setenant pair. Ex 'Sentosa' - sold in 2015 for S$7800 - and Dr William Wells. One of the strangest 'errors' of the entire British Commonwealth.
A client has advised that he bought the 'Sentosa' pane, believing it was unique. He has confirmed that this lot is only the second known surviving pane.
According to William Wells - and essentially repeated by Gibbons in a footnote - the native compositor was instructed to make a 'true copy' of the first overprint forme. After the sheets were printed, he realised that the former 'cnet' unit had been
corrected to 'cent', and apparently took it upon himself to carefully abrade the offending central letters and apply 'ne' in type by hand. The 'repair' is more heavily impressed and may be from a different font: it is obvious from the reverse. Dr
Wells stated "Less than fifteen stamps exist with this variety". This is probably the only surviving pane with the error. (Image1) (Image2)
