3622 og image1886-91 Surcharges on Straits Settlements with No Obliterating Bar at the Base 'PERAK/One/CENT' on QV Crown CA Wmk 2c Type 37 ('PERAK' & 'CENT' in smaller Roman letters) SG 56 handstamped 'SPECIMEN' Samuel Type SS4, fresh colour, large-part gum with a small hinge remainder, Cat £1200 without 'SPECIMEN' handstamp. Ex Marcus Samuel - illustrated by him at Plate 9 of 'Specimen Stamps of the Crown Colonies' and listed at page 152 (where incorrectly noted as Type SS3) - and Dr William Wells. According to Dr FE Wood, only one complete sheet was surcharged without obliterating bar, producing only 24 examples with this overprint type. It is not known how many of these were overprinted 'SPECIMEN', but it is quite possible that this is the only recorded example. (Image1) (Image2)
