1835 (Dec 14) entire letter headed "Penang" to "Maidstone, Kent", England endorsed "via Calcutta", the reverse with an unusually
fine strike of the 'PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND/POST OFFICE' double-ring intaglio undated handstamp in red (Proud P4; recorded 1826-34 only) endorsed "16th/Dec/1835", superb virtually complete 'CALCUTTA/G.P.O./SHIP LETTER/7 JAN 7/1836' boxed datestamp and
'INDIA LETTER/PORTSMOUTH' boxed handstamp both on the reverse, vertical file fold not impacting the first two markings otherwise very fine. Although the "via Calcutta" endorsement was subsequently crossed out, the entire was obviously carried by that
route. The lengthy & clearly-written letter advises of the death of the addressee's brother CWH Wright in September of that year and copies in extracts of his will bequeathing £500 in trust to her daughter (his niece). Prince of Wales Island at the
mouth of the Strait of Malacca along with Province Wellesley across the strait on the Malay Peninsula were formed into the Crown Colony of the Straits Settlements in 1867. A very fine example of this distinctive prestamp marking. Ex Dr William
Wells. (Image1)

1854 (Nov 1) folded entire letter headed "Porto penang" with lengthy message in French, to Bordeaux endorsed "via Marseilles" with
watery but legible complete strike of 'PENANG/.../Post Paid' boxed datestamp in red (Proud PS7) on the reverse, carried via Egypt with largely very fine British 'ALEXANDRIA/DE 7/1854' transit backstamp in blue, very fine French 'PAQ.
ANG./26/DEC/54/MARSEILLES' maritime sorter cds in red on the face where rated with '10' [centimes] handstamp for postage due, Bordeaux '17/DEC/54' arrival backstamp, light horizontal fold on the face clear of the markings & a couple of minor
blemishes. Either the Marseilles or Bordeaux datestamps have an incorrect day indicated, the item arriving the day after passing through the Marseilles sorter. Scarce: fewer than twenty of this Penang boxed datestamp are recorded. Ex Stolz (Part 2) -
