1797 (July 5) entire to "Royal Bank" Edinburgh rated "2/-" with a very fine complete strike of the scarce London 'JULY/5/97' boxed
(first type) late fee paid marking in black on the reverse, Scottish 'JY/6' Bishop Mark arrival in red alongside, light vertical file fold. The rate was triple 8d letter plus 6d late fee paid separately. Graham Hayward states that this is the
earliest recorded date of Britain's first late fee paid marking. Barrie Jay's similar example of 'AUG/9/97' - described as "barely a month after its introduction" - sold in 2000 for £345. (Image1) (Image2)

1817 (Dec 27) outer to "His Excellency, The Marquis of Hastings, Calcutta", India with London despatch backstamp rated "1/2"[d]
ship letter rate, largely very fine 'INDIA SHIP LETTER/GPO/LONDON' large crowned double-ring datestamp at upper left and similar strike of the scarce Foreign Office 'PUT IN AFTER 7 oCLOCK/AT NIGHT' scroll handstamp at upper-right with double-lined
star supervisor's mark below on the face, a couple of light folds, minor edge faults & small part of the reverse missing slightly affecting the London despatch cds. Graham Hayward states that this was the only type of late marking employed by the
Foreign Office, and is recorded used 1815-1817 only. A very similar item - the strikes of equivalent quality - sold at a London auction in 2005 for £500+. (Image1) (Image2)

to advise of re-addressing & delay, largely very fine complete strike of the scarce London 'TOO LATE for/MORNG POST' boxed handstamp and '12.NOON.12/NO.9/1825' double-oval datestamp both in red on the reverse, small piece missing alongside the seal
not affecting the markings and a few minor blemishes. Written up in the London Postal History Group 'Notebook' Number 165, December 2006. [After the Belgian Uprising of 1830, Bruges became part of the newly-formed country of Belgium]. (Image1) (Image2)

1830 (Dec 29) entire to "Miss Stewart, care of Major Stewart, Resident Hidrabad, East Indias" with London 'PAID' tombstone cancel
on the face and largely very fine complete 'POST PAID SHIP LT/LONDON' crowned datestamp in red alongside, worn but legible strike of 'MADRAS/11MY11/1831/SHIP LETTER' oval arrival datestamp in black on the reverse, light aging and a few minor edge
faults with non-contemporary "No9" annotation on the face. Interesting contents congratulating the receiver of her father's appointment as Resident, talking of the health of family back in England, even mentioning how her daughter's Hindi is
improving! The Princely State of Hyderabad had signed an agreement for British protection in 1798, and the British East India Company exerted considerable influence through its Resident. Very early mail to a non-British India destination. (Image1) (Image2)
