Social history exhibit 'Aubrey Gotley and the First A.N.A.R.E. Antarctic Base, Heard Island, 1947-1955', including a marvellous
group of mostly original official photographs of the 14-man first party including Stuart Campbell and Aub Gotley (leader for 14 months), landing stores & equipment including a generator & a 'Walrus' plane (later destroyed in a storm), numerous radio
message forms that convey the human side of the Expedition and some telegrams, the covers include genuine social mail from Heardites to their families, a rare 1d naval rate cover from an officer on the 'Labuan', one of only two known covers with the
accompanying letter from HMAS 'Australia' during the 1950 medical evacuation, and two covers from Gotley's fiancée to him care of ANARE HQ in Melbourne, also Gotley's original typed speech when he handed-over, newspaper articles & other ephemera. An
outstanding and poignant collection. Ex Kevin Dwyer. Weighs 3kg.

1961 Mawson Expedition Anniversary 5d SG 7 imperforate die proof on ungummed unwatermarked white wove paper (35x40mm) removed from
a presentation frame ACSC 368DP(1), Cat $2500. RPSL Certificate (1980) states "proof of unknown origin probably prepared for presentation purposes". The ACSC states that ten such proofs were prepared mounted in sunken frames, of which one is in the

1917 (Oct 28) usage of British 'Prisoners of War' Letter Sheet to Germany endorsed on the back flap from "Willy Pieper
Maschinenmaat, Emden's party, Prisoner of War 1089, Malta, Fort Salvatore" and letter headed "Malta 28.X.17", light oval 'FREE FROM PRISONER OF WAR/PC/MALTA' cachet in blue on the face, light transmission marks. The SMS 'Emden' was crippled in a
battle with the Australian warship HMS 'Sydney' off the Cocos Islands in 1914 and beached on the Islands. Some crew members escaped. Those who were captured were held in Australia and Ceylon, the latter subsequently transferred to Malta. (Image1) (Image2)

EAST/3JE39/NSW-AUST' cds and Seychelles KGVI 6c uncancelled, very fine 'C&W LTD/12JUN39/COCOS' [= Cable & Wireless station] double-ring cds transit backstamp, vertical fold at right not affecting the stamps & a few minor blemishes, Cat $1500. The
Australian Government contracted the flying boat 'Guba II' to undertake a survey flight from Australia across the Indian Ocean to Africa to assess the feasability of such a route in the event of disruption to the London-Singapore-Sydney route. On

in front of a mosque, lengthy message from LAC Peter Ansell headed "The Cocos Isles" begins "This is about the last letter I shall be writing from these Islands; in a few hours time I shall be flying up to Ceylon in a Liberator ...", to Essex UK with
an unusually very fine complete 'RAFPOST 301/27NOV45' Indian-Pattern cds applied on the reverse (as there was no blank space on front), small closed tear at top on opening otherwise very fine. The RAFPOST 301 cds was used at the heavy bomber airfield
constructed by the RAF on Brown's West Island and is notorious for being poorly struck: this is about as fine as it comes. Colin Riddell's similar example - with a short greetings message & fine strike only; minor defects - sold at our auction of
