LETTER CARDS: Swan 1d red with 'FOR USE WITHIN WESTERN AUSTRALIA' heading LC1, used 1913 to "Prague, Austria" (Czechoslovakia) with
Swans ½d green & 4d brown added tied 'REGISTERED/28JA13/ PERTH' oval datestamps with red/white R label alongside, 'PRAHA 1/22.II.13/PRAG 1' arrival backstamp, no message, a few minor transmission marks. Printed in Melbourne, the heading was
incompatible with the prevailing 1902 WA postage rates: 1d was the town letter rate only, the intrastate rate being 2d. Only 2400 were delivered to Perth - in July 1902 - and they were withdrawn circa -.10.1902. Although this item was philatelically
inspired, all used examples are rare. Trevor Hiscock's example used socially in 1902 sold at our auction of 22.2.2013 for $2760 (Sale 178 Lot 359).

POSTAL CARDS: Swan 2d carmine PC3 to "Mesrs Macmillan & Co Publishers", London with 'VICTORIA PUBLIC LIBRARY/PERTH WA' large
crowned handstamp and message requesting a catalogue of their publications, very fine Perth duplex cancel of 'JU19/1890', a couple of minor blemishes. Exceptionally rare contemporary non-philatelic usage: most used examples are later philatelic
contrivances. Absent from Margaret Hamilton's comprehensive collection. Issued 1.1.1890 for the long sea route to Great Britain only. On 1.1.1891, the 2d postcard rate - somewhat inadvertently - was extended to all overseas destinations. Two months
later, this error was rectified. Upon the Australian Colonies formally joining the UPU on 1.10.1891, the overseas postcard rate became 1½d. The Postal Stationery Society of Australia Handbook (2002) lists only one date of correct usage known, being
the date of this card. The only other example we have offered - Trevor Hiscock's card sent to Germany on 28.7.1891 when the rate had been increased back to 6d thus underpaid but not taxed - sold at our auction of 22.2.2013 for $776 (Sale 178 Lot

POSTAL CARDS: QV 1½d blue 'POST CARD/AUSTRALIA' heading PC19 social usage to Germany with short greetings message from the
addressee's cousin, light Perth machine cancel overstuck with 'SHIP ROOM' cds, a couple of very minor transmission marks, Cat $1000 but unpriced "Used at correct rate". This card was issued in the first half of 1912, and thus had very limited usage.
The heading is substantially the same as that used for the first Commonwealth of Australia Kangaroo & KGV Heads Postal Cards issued to replace it. The four known used cards described in PSSA are either over-paid or late usages; we know of only a
handful of properly used examples paying the intended foreign postcard rate, one of which - also to Germany; a little aging - sold at our auction of 7.12.2023 for $2040 (Sale 254 Lot 3396). (Image1) (Image2)
