1857 (Sept 18) stampless consignee's entire to Massachusetts USA from Wilkinson Brothers (Melbourne) originally endorsed "per Titan
via Callao" [Peru] but amended to "via Panama", largely very fine 'PAID-TO/PANAMA' two-line handstamp in black at top and very fine 'STEAM SHIP/10' handstamp applied at New York for the incoming charge, ironed-out vertical filing fold clear of the
markings & minor edge faults. Carried by private ship to Panama City, across the isthmus to Aspinwall (later Colon) by railway (which had been completed by late-1855), then per US Mail Steamship Co to New York. Only the second example of the
'PAID-TO/PANAMA' marking recorded on an item of Victorian mail; not found in Dale Forster's exceptional collection of mail between the Australian Colonies and the USA. Ben Palmer lists only one example on 1858 cover (Census #93), from the same
correspondence. That item - the marking less clear - Ex Bill Purves & Gary Diffen: sold in 2025 for SFr724. (Image1) (Image2)

1857 (Nov 16) envelope to Scotland with unique Experimental Separations franking of QV Woodblocks 6d orange Serpentine Roulette
10-10½ (SG 58; Cat £225 x2+) slightly overlapping a huge and superb 'REGISTERED/ONE SHILLING' rose-pink & blue Rouletted 6½-7½ SG 55 (Cat £750; not priced on cover) both tied by fine Barred Numeral '1' of Melbourne (superb backstamp), the 1/- also
tied by British 'd6' handstamp, oval 'REGISTERED/ M /JA 13 58/GPO' of London in red on the face, the reverse with partial Dundee arrival from where readdressed to the hamlet of "Meigle" with 'COUPAR ANGUS/JA15/1858' arrival cds, very minor blemishes
barely detract from this beautiful and splendid cover. Ex Roland Geitenbeek: sold at our auction of 25.2.2016 for $14,130 (Sale 209 Lot 1109). RPSV (2015) and RPSL (2016) Certificates. In our opinion, for both the exceptional franking & the overall
quality of the stamps and envelope, this is one of the most outstanding of all Woodblock covers. Geoff Kellow at page 98, stated only 6800 of the 'REGISTERED' stamp were rouletted & that only four or five examples on cover have been recorded, of
which this is certainly the finest. Superior to Max Watson's similar cover - stamps with normal rouletting - from the same correspondence that sold at our auction of 8.10.2005 for $19,800 (Sale 118 Lot 623). (Image1)

1860 (May) envelope to London with very fine strike of the 50mm diameter 'FROM THE/INGLEWOOD/ AUSTRALIAN EXPRESS' handstamp on the
reverse, placed into the postal system at 'SANDY CREEK' (crowned-oval backstamp) where Queen-on-Throne 6d tied by indistinct numeral cancel, Melbourne transit backstamp, ironed-out folds & minor blemishes. Only two or three examples recorded. Ex Ken
Kutz - illustrated by him in 'Gold Fever' at page 90 - and Michael Silvasich: sold for $11,065 (Sale 121 Lot 481).
Rapid population expansion on the goldfields outstripped the provision of key services, including the opening of new post offices. This gap was filled by several private carriers who operated unauthorised and short-lived 'Goldfield Express Coach
Services', until they were suppressed by the Victorian Post Office. Mail has been recorded from several such ventures but no more than two or three examples of each are known. This is one of the finest and most impressive express handstamp entires. (Image1) (Image2)

strikes of the rare Type 1 'RMSS/ V /DC-26/63/HOBSONS BAY - VICTORIA' duplex, fine 'H&K PACT/1864' transit backstamp, minor flap fault. A very desirable & important postal history item. Ex Roy Holland: sold at our auction of 7.5.2013 for $6115 (Sale
