POSTAL HISTORY: 1876 (Jan 10) to the Cape Colony with Arms Imperforate 6d blue (margins large to just touched at left; minor fault
where affixed over edge) tied by light strike of '9' Numeral-in-rings cancel with another bold central strike, largely very fine 'HEIDELBERG/Z.A.R/ZUID AFRIKA' cds at lower-left, slightly indistinct Kimberley (Griqualand West) transit and over-inked
'GRAAFF REINET/JA27/1876' oval arrival datestamp on reverse, a bit roughly opened on the back & minor aging marks. By convention of 1872, the rates between the Transvaal & Cape Colony were set at their respective internal letter rates, being 6d per
½oz from Transvaal. Until the Cape Colony and the Orange Free State signed a Postal Convention of 1877, mail was routed via Griqualand West to avoid paying an additional charge for Orange Free State internal postage. (Image1) (Image2)
