1896-1902 QV Sidefaces (White Background) Figures in the Lower Corners Only 6d imperforate die proof of the master block of 4 in
green (close to the issued colour) on thin card ACSC Q42(DP)2B, margins close at the top to large, light crease coincident with the upper frame, Cat $15,000. Ex Queensland Government Printer William Knight, JH Chapman and Colonel Harrie Evans: sold
at our auction of 4.5.2002 for $9620 (Sale 96 Lot 468). One of the most important surface-printed proof items of the Australian Colonies/States. Illustrated in the ACSC and by Ken Scudder at page 215, both stating that only this and a similar block
in blue (whereabouts unknown to us) have been recorded.
The issued 6d stamp SG 230 is one of the great rarities of Queensland, and of the Commonwealth Period States issues. The ACSC still states "...sixteen examples are recorded". However Ken Scudder has accounted for 19, including the famous pair, and a
new discovery made only in 2009. The ACSC continues: "...The stamp was first discovered in 1903 shortly after issue...Most examples have the Parcel Post Branch datestamp...The dates range between April and November 1902. The origin of these stamps is
uncertain and remains controversial..."
The uncertainty is over whether complete sheets were printed, which seems unlikely, or if one (or possibly more) master die block of 4 was inserted in error into the sheet of 120 (two plates of 60). Any notion that only one unit may have been
inserted in error has been dismissed by the identifying of four separate sub-types among the used stamps and, of course, the existence of a horizontal pair. The 'controversy' is over calls to treat this as an 'unissued' stamp, which is at odds with
all the empirical evidence. (Image1) (Image2)

1896-1902 QV Sidefaces (White Background) Figures in the Lower Corners Only 6d yellow-green ACSC Q42A (SG 230), characteristic
irregular perfs, partial '.../OC8/02/QUEENSLAND' cds, Cat $25,000 (£16,000). Ex Colonel Harrie Evans: sold in 2002 for $29,430 (Sale 96 Lot 417). One of the great rarities of Queensland, and of the Commonwealth Period States issues. This is the
example illustrated in Robson Lowe's 'British Empire in Australasia' at page 117 and in the ACSC. The 2002 sale result is what caused the stamp to be properly listed and priced by Stanley Gibbons. RPSV Certificate (2001) at which time the stamp was
mentioned by Gibbons in a footnote only.
The ACSC advises that "...sixteen examples are recorded..." However, Ken Scudder at page 212 identifies 19 examples across the four sub-types. This is his Sub-Type 1: "Bust lines touch oval". (Image1) (Image2)

1897-1908 QV Sidefaces Numerals at Four Corners Crown/Q Watermark '6' Perf 12½,13 2d blue Cracked Electro Retouch ACSC #Q16d(var)
(SG 234a var), a couple of pulled perfs, light Rays cancel. Rare and unlisted in the ACSC: the only example we have recorded. The 'Cracked Electro' ACSC Q16d (SG 234a) presents as a Jagged White Flaw from the Brow to the Base of the Neck. This stamp
appears to have a crude retouch involving a simple filling of the crack so that it now presents as a Colour Flaw. Geoff Kellow was apparently unaware of the retouch as he does not mention this intermediate state before the unit was substituted. Ex
Bernie Manning: sold for $1165 (Sale 146 Lot 1186). (Image1) (Image2)
