intact & undamaged 'E [crown] R/OPENED UNDER MARTIAL LAW' label over 'DIYATALAWA CAMP/JU1/01' arrival backstamp proving that the label was applied at the Camp, light Camp censor cachet on the face. Most such labels were badly damaged on opening.

by 'RAGAMA CAMP' cds and the huge oval 'RAGAMA CAMP/PASSED/CENSOR' cachet in violet, Colombo cds & 'R'-in-box cachet, partial French mail-sorter and faint 'SIMIANE', the brief message states "Souvenir du captivité". Superb. Registered postcards are
extremely elusive. The Castle of Simiane dates from the 17th century. In the 19th century it served as the local town hall & post office. Since 1913 it has been a registered Historic Monument, open to the public. (Image1) (Image2)

1901 (Dec 20) Transvaal 1d Postal Card to a Boer POW at "Peace Camp/Diyatalawa", and 1902 (Mar 1) CofGH cover to "Dijatalawa/Camp
hut 71/Vrieede Kamp" both redirected to "Urugasmanhandiya", minor blemishes. 176 Boers volunteered to join the Indian Army and, on 10.9.1901, they were moved to a so-called Peace Camp at Urugas, some 50km north of Galle. The Indian proposal
fell-through and the POWs remained at Urugas as parolees. These are the only items we have seen with direct references to the Peace Camp. (2)

soiling & a small repair at upper-left. A remarkable item: registered third-class mail is rare; and Theophilus van Ost was an inmate at Welikada Jail from 11.12.1901 until -.2.1902. (Image1) (Image2)

1901-02 consular mail comprising covers from Diyatalawa to "le Consul de France/Colombo" and from Ragama to "Consul

Place/Colombo", the addressee having apparently been parolled.

1902 (Jan 28) cover front to "The Hon Secretary/Boer Football Club/Uregasmanhandiya" with 5c tied by 'GALLE' cds, stained at the
base, with the enclosure to "T Curran/The Camp" stating "Dear Curran. If it stops raining I will turn out to play...G Hilton Adjt". A remarkable insight into the affable relations between the Boers & their captors. Theophilus John Curran was one of
the "Irreconcilables", the Boers who preferred confinement to making an Oath of Allegiance to England. Uregasmanhandiya was a small POW camp on the Galle Road from Colombo, about 50km north of Galle.

1902 (July 2) cover to "Simla/India" with 5c (defective) tied by very fine 'RAGAMA CAMP' cds, 'SIMLA/9JL02' arrival backstamp,
light toning. With the enclosed letter headed "1st Glouc Regt/Ceylon" to the writer's sister in which he states "...There's a prison within a mile of this camp where all native convicts undergoing long sentences are sent to. A few days ago 75 of them
suddenly rushed the warders with crowbars & pickaxes. 2 were shot dead & several wounded...there are still about 30 of them loose..." Mail from the British Forces camp guards is rare, this being greatly enhanced for including such a topical letter.

than mail redirected there. (Image1) (Image2)

1902 (Nov 13) uncensored cover with 2c & 3c tied by Colombo cds to the reverse, to "GJ Theron Esq (!) POW/Hut No 58/The
Camp/Diyatalawa", very fine. On 31.5.1902, signing of the Treaty of Vereeniging formally ended the Second Boer War. In Ceylon, censorship ended on 17.7.1902 & most of the POWs were released, the majority returning to South Africa, while others chose
to move to the Dutch East Indies. A small number of "Irreconcilables", the hold-outs who refused to sign an Oath of Allegiance to King Edward VII, remained in custody. On 24.9.1903, the final five remaining POWs were released. (Image1) (Image2)
