3147 c image1861 (Apr 6) internal mourning cover to "The Rev GW Sprott/Col Chaplain/Kandy" with Imperf 1d blue SG 5 (virtually full margins - just touched at upper-right - with a chunk of the adjoining unit below; Cat £170 x4+) tied by manuscript "Stamped" & with light bars cancel, the reverse with almost fine strike of the badly-worn 'NUWARRA-ELLIA/=POST-PAID=' handstamp in red (Proud PD2) with manuscript date "6 April/61" added, poor Kandy arrival also in red & inscription in Sinhala. Presbyterian minister George Washington Sprott went to Ceylon in 1857 where he served as Chaplain to the Scottish troops in Kandy and was Chaplain at Scots Kirk in Kandy for seven years. 3148 c image1861 (May 30) neat social cover to England "via Marseilles" with rare franking of Star Wmk Clean-Cut Perf 9d purple-brown SG 25 (perfs at base trimmed clear of the design; Cat £275 x8+ on cover), almost fine 'GALLE/MY30/1861/=POST-PAID=' backstamp in red, 'LONDON-EC/ AX /JU26/61/PAID' arrival cds in red, light bend at the base. Kimmel & Pearson at page 477 list only three Star Wmk Clean-Cut Perf 9d covers. This example is not listed, and is the earliest of them by three weeks. Kimmel & Pearson at page 475 state "all shades of the perforated Six Pence...are scarce on cover". For the Rough Perf 6d, they list only six covers, of which three are franked with SG 31. 3162 c image1940 (Nov 20) advertising cover for JA & EPA Fernando Miners & Exporters with 'PLUMBAGO MINE/ [elephant]/OWNERS' emblem on the flap by air to Illinois with KGVI 50c Elephants x7 (one on the reverse) tied by 'BORELLA' cds, censor label '30' (no 'L'), 'VICTORIA/7DE/40/HONG KONG' transit backstamp & triangular censor #20 cachet in green. Flown to Calcutta, then "Over the Hump" to Chungking China & from Hong Kong per PanAm 'Clipper', very minor repaired peripheral tears. A handsome cover. Plumbago is better known as graphite. Ceylon is the only country to produce the purest form of 'vein' graphite. Plumbago mining was the basis for the wealth of several prominent Singhalese families. (Image1) (Image2)
