1942 (Aug 10) Japanese Occupation unfranked cover from Chiitagong, Bengal, India addressed to "Capt Suman Chowdry (Medical), of
No.1 Burma Staging Section, Last heard of: MYITKYINA, BURMA, c/o Japanese Red Cross Society, Tokyo", censored at Bombay with 'DHB/168' cachet, presumably where the 'C/O PRISONER OF WAR INFORMATION BUREAU TOKYO' handstamp in the same ink was applied,
resealed with brown tape at left tied by 'PASSED' handstamp, '.../29-7-43/MYITKYINA' arrival backstamp (almost one full year after being posted) and horse-shoe postage due marking on the face, this crossed out and redirected to "Rangoon/ DLO" [Dead
Letter Office] with '20-8-43/D.L.O. RANGOON' boxed backstamp, some edge faults & other blemishes. Rare: possibly the only surviving item from this scarce mailing that ever reached Burma.
David Tett at p9-12 illustrates three similar items - none of which show any evidence of having reached Burma - and quotes an article by Dr S Chowdhury in the Stamp Digest (Calcutta) of Jan-Feb 1971 [a photocopy - illustrating this item - is included
here] which states that "In August 1942, Government of India arranged with the International Red Cross Society to despatch letters to all persons, military as well as civil, known to be left in Burma ... As all the letters were dated August 1942, it
is assumed that only one batch was despatched". The enclosed letter from his brother with the same censor cachet states in part "We have come to know by a letter from Doctor Suhinder Singh MBBS (Rangoon) that you were last seen in Myitkyina ...".
Myitkyina in the north was where refugees from other parts gathered to flee via the mountain passes into India; it was the last major city to be captured by the Japanese.

in rosine, endorsed "Medan", "no record in Pakan Barao" and finally "Burma", light Japanese censor in violet & faint han of Asanamura in rosine, a few faults consistent with being received on the infamous Burma-Siam Railway. (Image1) (Image2)

1943 (Aug 29) Japanese Occupation Netherlands Indies Postal Card 3½c Dai Nippon black/buff to "Jan van Beneden, Mil Sold, War
Prisoners Camp, Moulmein, Burma (5)" endorsed "Tawanan Militer" [Military Prisoner] with 'KOEDOES' cds cancel, Japanese boxed censor cachet with manuscript censor identification in place of han cachet and "11972" prisoner number in pencil alongside,
multiple heavy folds presumably from having been kept safe in a pocket for many months. David Tett illustrates only two other Netherlands Indies Postal Cards addressed directly to POWs on the infamous Burma-Siam Railway. Most items were re-directions
of mail addressed to Singapore or Thailand, as news of the POWs being held in Burma did not filter out until mid-1943. (Image1) (Image2)
