1938 (Dec) England-Australia per Qantas flying boat 'Coorong' which broke its moorings at Darwin & was thrown onto the rocky shore,
to Queensland with Great Britain KGVI ½d green & 1d red tied by Belfast slogan cancel, boxed 'DAMAGED BY WATER/THROUGH ACCIDENT/TO FLYING BOAT' cachet in violet of Brisbane, flap missing & minor blemishes, AAMC 835; unpriced: no mail recorded. See
Volume Three at pages 275-281, this item illustrated at page 277. This was the discovery cover, appearing only in 2009. Brian Peace states only five other 'Coorong' covers have been identified. NB: most items offered as from the 'Coorong' incident
are dated in November & must therefore be from the 'Calpurnia' crash. A very desirable item for the collector of EAMS mail. (Image1) (Image2)

1939 (Mar 8) cover per 'Capella' ex Sydney which struck a bollard in Batavia Harbour on 12.3.1939 and sank without damage to the
mails, to Hungary with 9d Platypus & 1/- Lyrebird tied by Sydney slogan, Greek Currency Control handstamp & poor Hungarian arrival backstamp, light creases, AAMC 843a, Cat $900. The AAMC, Henri Nierinck and Ken Sanford all incorrectly state that
'Capella' was flying to Australia. This resulted in no mail being identified for many years. This discovery item was identified only in 2013. See Volume Three at pages 285-9, illustrated at page 286. (Image1) (Image2)

of wind, covers to England on Brian Peace's exhibit pages with various cachets mostly in red including 'SALVAGED MAIL/EX CENTURION' with Reversed 'D' in 'SALVAGED' x3, ' _ALVAGED _AIL/EX CENTURION' ('S' & 'M' omitted) x2, '.../EX.CENTURIA' in error
x2, the first also with boxed 'DAMAGED BY/SEA WATER/IN AIRPLANE/ACCIDENT' in violet, five with one or more stamps washed-off & some water-damage, AAMC 868, Cat from $125 x9. See Volume Three at pages 300-316, where several are illustrated. Probably
the most well-known crash of the Empire Air Mail Scheme period.

tied by 'GPO SYDNEY/ DR /25JA40/ 1 /NSW-AUST' cds, AAMC 888, Cat from $350. Note: the aircraft was a Lockheed land plane, not a flying boat. See Volume 4 at pages 131-148, illustrated on page 146 & on the Back Cover.
The addressee, Miss Nancy Bird, was a pioneer aviatrix who was one of Charles Kingsford Smith's first flying students. In 1935, aged 21, she established a flying doctor service into Outback New South Wales. 1938-39 she worked for KLM in Europe in a
promotional role, returning to Australia at the outbreak of WWII to train women pilots. In 1950, she founded the Australian Women Pilots' Association. She was never involved in an air crash! In 1997, the National Trust declared her an Australian
Living Treasure. Sydney's new international airport is to be named Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) - her married name - in her honour. (Image1) (Image2)

Cloncurry by engine-trouble, causing late arrival of the mails at Brisbane, the second with Qantas commemorative airmail label, both with lengthy manuscript advice re the delay in red with 'ASST SUPT OF MAILS' & '21JUL1941' cachets & signed "R
Wardrop", both also signed by pilots "SK Howard" & "CHC Swaffield", AAMC 919 (which does not mention the delay), Cat $75 each. See Volume Four at pages 12-13, where the return cover is illustrated.

while on the ground at Medan (Sumatra), to a soldier in the Middle East with the stamp washed-off, with the roneo'd incident advice "The enclosed letter was damaged en route through enemy action CB Lancaster OC AABPO", AAMC 934a, unpriced. See Volume
4 at pages 151-7, illustrated at page 155. Only four covers - two in seriously distressed condition - and two ambulance envelopes from this incident have been recorded.
