1940 (Aug 23) Noyes Bros Sydney envelope airmail to USA initially endorsed "per Australia New Zealand Air Mail" but altered to
delete "New Zealand" and add "Hong Hong USA" with AIF 2d red & 6d brown (scarce on cover), 1/- Lyrebird & 1/6d Hermes x2 tied by Sydney cds cancels, Hong Kong 'VICTORIA/1 SP/40' transit backstamp and triangular 'PASSED' censor handstamp in green on
the face, a couple of very minor blemishes. The Pan-Am FAM-19 Trans-Pacific Clipper Service from New Zealand had commenced in July 1940 at the rate of 4/- per ½oz, but the California Clipper had departed Auckland on 17.8.1941, and the next service by
the American Clipper was not due to leave until early September, so the sender chose to re-route the item via QANTAS/Imperial Airways to Hong Kong and Pan-Am's FAM-14 service at the higher 4/8d per ½oz rate (adding the two AIF values); however, it
was all in vain as this service reached San Francisco one day later than the American Clipper. The comparative speed & cost of the FAM-19 service makes it most unusual to find items routed via Hong Kong after July 1940. (Image1) (Image2)

1940 (Oct 14) airmail cover to the British Embassy in Tokyo with CofA Wmk 2/- + KGVI 2d tied by 'AIR MAIL/ 1 BRISBANE 1 ' cds,
red/white censor label with one large dot tied by superb strike of the boxed 'PASSED BY/CENSOR 6' h/s in violet, Japanese notation in blue-pencil. Ex 'Tillie Mitchell': sold at our auction of 29.8.2020 for $320+ (Sale 242 Lot 179). [The rate is
problematic. Martin Walker states the all-up rate for air to Hong Kong was 1/- for the first ½oz + 11d for each successive ½oz. There was an air service between Shanghai & Tokyo & this cover suggests the all-up rate (as endorsed on the cover) was
1/1d for the first ½oz + 1/- for the second ½oz + 1d late fee] (Image1) (Image2)
