1902 (July 2) cover to "Simla/India" with 5c (defective) tied by very fine 'RAGAMA CAMP' cds, 'SIMLA/9JL02' arrival backstamp,
light toning. With the enclosed letter headed "1st Glouc Regt/Ceylon" to the writer's sister in which he states "...There's a prison within a mile of this camp where all native convicts undergoing long sentences are sent to. A few days ago 75 of them
suddenly rushed the warders with crowbars & pickaxes. 2 were shot dead & several wounded...there are still about 30 of them loose..." Mail from the British Forces camp guards is rare, this being greatly enhanced for including such a topical letter.

1902 (Sep 10) use of 6c green Letter Card to "Prisoners Kamp/Dist Pretoria Transvaal" with largely very fine strike of the 'URUGAS
CAMP' cds (recorded 13 months only), Pretoria transit - where endorsed "Irene" - & 'IRENE' arrival backstamps both of 26SEP02, light soiling. Mail from Urugasmanhandiya - rendered by the writer as "Urichhasmeahandied"; close enough! - is much scarcer
than mail redirected there. (Image1) (Image2)

1902 (Nov 13) uncensored cover with 2c & 3c tied by Colombo cds to the reverse, to "GJ Theron Esq (!) POW/Hut No 58/The
Camp/Diyatalawa", very fine. On 31.5.1902, signing of the Treaty of Vereeniging formally ended the Second Boer War. In Ceylon, censorship ended on 17.7.1902 & most of the POWs were released, the majority returning to South Africa, while others chose
to move to the Dutch East Indies. A small number of "Irreconcilables", the hold-outs who refused to sign an Oath of Allegiance to King Edward VII, remained in custody. On 24.9.1903, the final five remaining POWs were released to various parts of
Ceylon. (Image1)

Balance of the collection on Bruce Haynes' exhibit pages with better items including censor cachets & labels from both South Africa
& Ceylon, plenty of postmark content, a few registered items, others missent or taxed, covers to camps at Mount Lavinia, Hambantota & Urugas, inter-camp mails within Ceylon and to/from South Africa & a couple of others including Basutoland, several
from overseas probably to Foreign Volunteers who had served with the Boers including a letter card from Belgium (toned), some attractive postcards & postal stationery, etc, condition rather mixed but a bargain at the estimate.
