fell-through and the POWs remained at Urugas as parolees. These are the only items we have seen with direct references to the Peace Camp. (2)

Ceylon/Sri Lanka's largest jail. It was built by the British in 1841, and during the Boer War, it housed the most troublesome POWs. Only three examples of the triangular cachet are recorded. (Image1) (Image2)

1902 (Jan 28) cover front to "The Hon Secretary/Boer Football Club/Uregasmanhandiya" with 5c tied by 'GALLE' cds, stained at the
base, with the enclosure to "T Curran/The Camp" stating "Dear Curran. If it stops raining I will turn out to play...G Hilton Adjt". A remarkable insight into the affable relations between the Boers & their captors. Theophilus John Curran was one of
the "Irreconcilables", the Boers who preferred confinement to making an Oath of Allegiance to England. Uregasmanhandiya was a small POW camp on the Galle Road from Colombo, about 50km north of Galle.

1902 (Feb 20) cover from the Transvaal to "Welikada Convict Est/Colombo", Colombo arrival backstamp of MR11/02, very minor
flap-damage. Addressed to JF Bothma who, with Theophilus John Curran, was co-editor of the handwritten jail newspaper 'The Welikada Justice'. Bothma was a persistent escapee who, after several incidents, was confined to Welikada. Ironically, he ended
up in the Urugas Peace Camp. See 'Prisoners of the Boer War in Ceylon & the Dutch East Indies' by Brohier & Woodruff (2015) pages 159-162.
