POSTAL HISTORY: 1865 (circa) Dietz & Nelson's British Columbia & Victoria Express envelope with 'PAID' ribbon frank [DIE-002] in
black at upper-left, to William's Creek with British Columbia & Vancouver Island 2½d pale rose (SG 3; Cat £200 each used) horizontal pair tied by 'DIETZ & NELSON'S/EXPRESS/B.C. & V.' circular handstamp in blue, 'POST OFFICE/PAID/VICTORIA VANCOUVER
ISLAND' undated oval cachet at lower-left, endorsed "Coll 1.00" in manuscript alongside the adhesives, a little roughly opened at lower-left just affecting the 'PAID' cachet and some pencil annotations on the reverse. Gibbons states that after
decimalisation the 2½d values were sold at 5c, but that between May-November 1865, they "were used to to prepay mail from Vancouver Island to British Columbia at the price of 15 cents a pair". The $1 express fee was collected by Barnard's Express for
carriage of the letter from Yale to the mining area of Williams Creek on the Cariboo goldfields. An attractive combination express usage.
