 £2 black & rose-carmine Die II as SG 16 but a Sperati Forgery ACSC 55c, genuine 'AYR/14SE13/ QUEENSLAND' cds cancel largely clear
of the Kangaroo, 'SPERATI/["50"]/REPRODUCTION' handstamp on the reverse, Cat $8500. RPSL Certificate (1971). The only Commonwealth of Australia stamp created by Sperati, and a very fine example of this iconic counterfeit by the master-forger.
The principal identifier of the forgery is the Scratch from Warrnambool past the Western Coast of Tasmania. In 'Sperati' by the British Philatelic Association (BPA), it is stated at page 31 that this flaw is constant on Pos [L50] of the issued
stamps. This is confirmed by WH Holbeach at page 52 and page 160, and by the ACSC in footnote 2. However, the variety is still not listed in the ACSC for the issued stamps. (Image1) (Image2)
