1860 (Jan 13) linen-lined envelope from Cape of Good Hope addressed to "Isaac Wood Esqre, Perth, Western Australia" endorsed "per
'Pauline' or first vessel to Mauritius thence per Mail Str via Adelaide" franked with Triangles 4d blue (margins good to close) and 6d lilac (margins large to touching) tied by CGH cancels with very fine complete 'CAPE TOWN/CAPE OF GOOD HOPE' cds in
red on the reverse, light but largely very fine 'PERTH/MY 9/1860/WESTERN AUSTRALIA' double-arc cds arrival in blue on the face, minor transmission marks & small corner faults.
The four months passage suggests that the item was carried via England rather than Mauritius. Colin Tabeart lists a P&O Steamer service arriving at King George's Sound (Albany, WA) on 29-30 April 1860 carried by the 'Indus' to Suez leaving
Southampton on 12 March 1860 (plenty of time for the mails to have arrived from the Cape Colony) and the 'Malta' from Alexandria, and states earlier (page 60) that the journey from Albany to Perth "in the late 1850s took of the order of 10 days",
which fits with the Perth arrival marking. Brian Trotter (page 148) gives the postage rates from the Cape Postal Notice of 1858 to the Australian Colonies via Britain as 11d per ½oz. Neither the 1860 Cape Almanac nor the 1860 Cape Postal Notice list
rates to the Australian Colonies, so it is unclear whether these were reduced to 10d per ½oz or whether the item was underpaid. A remarkable origin for mail to Western Australia in this early period. (Image1) (Image2)

largely very fine strike of the rare 'ROYAL CELEBRATIONS/FRANK/[arms]/STAMP/ Western Australia' (unusually with sentence case at the base) handstamp in blue, 'LC ROOM/JY2/01/PERTH' duplex & 'P . R/PERTH WA' (= Post Restante) backstamp, unfortunately
stained at right & the flap removed but, remarkably, not folded. With the enclosed illustrated invitation (305x230mm) for the Royal Visit of the Duke & Duchess of York in July 1901, on their way back from New Zealand; plus a second illustrated but
less elaborate invitation to a Reception for the Royal Couple in Perth on 23.7.1901, repaired tear & reinforced crease at right still attractive. See also Lot 313902.

1932 (Aug 13) possibly commercial uprated British Postal Card by air & registered also with 'AR'-in-oval to "Cocos & Keeling
Island/Strait Settlements/Via Java" with full message, Singapore backstamp of 26AU/1932 proving carriage by air to that point, unclaimed & returned with backstamps of Singapore (21.12.1932) & London (2.2.1933, indicating returned by sea), boxed
'.../RETURN TO SENDER' cachet & oval 'REGISTERED/ 2 /2FEB33/RETD LTR SECTION' datestamp both in violet , remarkably with the original Avis de Reception card still affixed with confirming postmarks of London & Singapore, some inevitable but relatively
minor creasing.
An extraordinary item: registered postcards are rare & we cannot recall having seen another sent 'AR', let alone with the reply card still attached. In addition, this may be the earliest part-air commercial item recorded to Cocos. Colin Riddell's
exceptional collection included no mail from or into Cocos between -.12.1921 & -.4.1933. (Image1) (Image2)
