 1974-79 Paintings $10 'Coming South' imperf strip of 3 with 'AUSTRALIA $10' at top and at the base from the lower-right corner of a
sheet printed on the reverse of a scientific paper, light central bend & minor blemishes. Not previously seen by us, & not recorded in the ACSC. With a single overprinted 'SPECIMEN' for comparison. RPSV Certificate (2024) states "it is genuine but
believed to be printer's waste", which is an unkind way of saying that it's from a trial printing, possibly to check the colour registration.

 1982 Queen's Birthday as 27c SG 741 but from the initial 24c printing ACSC 949E(1) marginal example from the base of the sheet,
unmounted, under-catalogued at $3500 (inexplicably reduced from $5000 in the previous edition). Unissued: with the issued 27c for comparison. A great modern rarity. The ACSC erroneously classifies this as an essay & states only six examples exist.
However, the Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2004) states "only 10 recorded". The initial printing was of the 24c stamps. The rate was increased to 27c & a second print run at 27c was ordered. In our opinion, this is an unissued stamp, not an essay. The
ACSC similarly classifies the initial printing of the 60c Whale as an essay, yet there is no doubt a quantity of those stamps were sold by Australia Post, and commercial usage is recorded. A block of 6 was discovered by Gary Watson in early-2002. The
block was divided into two singles and a block of 4, offered in our auction of 9.3.2002 (Sale 94 Lots 1165-1167). The singles sold for $4480 & $4256 - this stamp - and the block sold for $15,680. (Image1) (Image2)
