1940 commercial airmail cover from France with 50c 2fr50c & 5fr tied by poor hexagonal 'VALENCE' datestamps, to a French ship at
Vila with jusqu'a bars of Marseilles across the 'PAR AVION' "label", censored at Sydney, minor aging. Italy declared war on 6.6.1940, causing immediate suspension of British flights across the Mediterranean. France capitulated on 22.6.1940. Valence
was in the Vichy area. It is not clear how the cover travelled, probably by French train or ship to Portugal. An excellent research piece.

1941-44 social covers censored at Vila with bilingual 'OPENED BY CENSOR - NEW HEBRIDES/OUVERT PAR LA CENSURE...' labels comprising
1) 1941 (Feb 17) to France endorsed "voie Panair/via Noumea-San Francisco/Lisbonne" with Gold Currency 5c 30c & 1fr & blue/brown...' label; 2) 1944 (Sep 28) to USA with 30c & blue/white label; and 3) 1944 (Dec 1) air to NSW with 5c 10c 15c & 20c and
black/white label; minor blemishes. Rare trio.
Three different labels were recorded by the Civil Censorship Study Group in 2008. Type L1 is typed, recorded 23OC39 only; L2 is the brown label & we expect the recorded example, of 12JE40, has the text printed in blue as here; L3 is as for the white
labels here, recorded 3DE39, which we expect is printed in blue, and 21NO44, which may have the text in blue or black. Unfortunately, they are not listed in John Little's book. (3) (Image1) (Image2)

1965 social usage of Australian Territories 'Overseas Service' formular Aerogramme with message headed "Apostolic Church
Mission/Walaha, Aoba/Via Santo", to USA with combination franking of 1957 British 10c + French 25c tied by French 'PORT-VILA' cds, letter states "...I am now back on Aoba helping the new [missionary] couple to settle into the work..." A rare
non-philatelic usage. The ACSC prices most of the Territories issues - which could also be used in the Solomons & New Hebrides - for philatelic usage, in this case $150, usually not also pricing the elusive commercial items. (Image1) (Image2)
