1889 cover to merchants in Cairo "Via Brindisi" with Greek Small Hermes Heads Imperf 25L tied by fine 'KERKYRA' cds, Cairo arrival
backstamp of 27 V 89 & of 29 V 89 on the face for redirection to a different firm in "Wady Haffa" [sic] with 24mm 'WADI-HALFA/9JU89/...' arrival backstamp. An extraordinary origin/destination cover. Kerkyra is the main town on Corfu, an island off
the Aegean Coast near the border with Albania. Brindisi is some 500km to the north-west but probably permitted faster transit to Egypt.

1915 (May) advertising cover for a Greek merchant at 'Singa - Roseires' with manuscript "X" cancel on an apparently re-used 5m tied
by three of four very fine strikes of an abnormal retta of large diamonds apparently applied at Roseires with cds of 29.V.15 below, to Cairo with TPO backstamps 'KHARTOUM-EL-OBEID/ TPO/5MAR14/No1' (impossible date) & 'SHELLAL-HALFA/TPO/3JU15/No1',
straight-line 'PASSED BY CENSOR' in violet, minor blemishes. Singa (today Sinjah) is actually 160km NNW of Roseires. A retta was used on stamps not cancelled at the origin & it seems clear that it was struck at Roseires: not recorded by Proud. Singa
had a PO but Proud records no cds between 29.9.1910 & 25.9.1917. The fact this 1915 cover wasn't cancelled there strongly indicates the PO was closed, possibly for as long as seven years. (Image1) (Image2)
