1505 c imageTAICHU (CAMP NUMBER 2): 1943 (July 8) cover from London to "Taiwan Camp" with British censor label, directed to Camp "2" in red pencil, faint censor in violet with han in scarlet, pencilled "22.6.44" receival on the reverse. Illustrated by David Tett in Volume 6 at page 357 & stated to be the only item recorded to Camp Number 2. POWs worked on construction & maintenance projects. The camp was closed in mid-1944 after a tropical storm destroyed all bridges in the area. (Image1) (Image2)

1506 c imageTAIHOKU (CAMP NUMBER 5): circa 1943 plain envelope endorsed "From CR Smith/Prisoners of War Camp/Taiwan" at upper-left with 'SERVICE/DES/PRISONNIERS DE GUERRE' cachet in violet, to Somerset with Japanese censors in rosine & violet & superb han of Ishii in scarlet, British censor label, opened a bit roughly with repaired tear at the top. Taihoku No 5 was a very small camp, holding the 28 most senior captured officers & the former Governors of the British Colonies. The sender, Charles Robert Smith, was Governor of North Borneo 1937-42, and again 1945-46. He was interned successively at Berhala Island near Sandakan, Batu Lintang at Kuching, in Manchuria, & finally in Taiwan. (Image1) (Image2)

1512 c/D imageUNKNOWN CAMP: 1945 (May 10) British Red Cross roneo'd 'Following is the text of a telegram received from Tokyo via Geneva' endorsed "Taiwan" & requesting return telegram, with the black/brown '.../PRISONER OF WAR/TELEGRAM' envelope to Norfolk. Plus a newspaper extract referencing this item & highlighting that this was a very unusual occurrence & stating "...the scheme is operating very slowly...[this] should be regarded as the exception rather than the rule". All ilustrated by David Tett in Volume 6 at pages 356-7, where he states that 33,000 telegrams had been sent to Tokyo from Britain but only 298 had been received from there.
