1428 PSE imageTJILATJAP (CAMP B): 1942 (circa) Japanese POW Postal Card with address instructions in English & Malay endorsed "B (10) 5" (Camp; Compound; Prisoner's Number), impermissible lengthy handwritten letter but allowed to pass with superb han of Shono in red, light strike of the scarce boxed 'SOERAT PEM/ BALASANNIA/HAROES DA-/LAM BAHASA/INDONESIA' (= reply must be in the Indonesian language!) & British censor both in rosine, a few bends. Compound 10 was predominantly for Dutch POWs. Lindsay Chitty states that Sgt Brooker was one of only six (injured) British soldiers held there. The Bahasa marking was used only at Tjilatjap, which is on the south coast of Java. (Image1) (Image2)

1429 c imageATJEH: 1944 (Feb 22) plain cover from Wales with bold 'BANGOR CARMARTHENSHIRE' cds, to "Malaya Camp" but endorsed "Medan" in blue then "ATJEH" in red on both sides, censor in violet with han of Asanamura in scarlet, heavy vertical fold & soiled. Ex David Tett: sold for HK$1200. Illustrated in Volume 2 at page 177. At page 175, Tett states that very little mail was received at Medan or Atjeh. In June 1944, the POWs in northern Sumatra were moved south to work on the Sumatran Death Railroad, where this cover was probably received. (Image1) (Image2)

1432 PSE imagePANGKALANBALEI CAMP: 1944 (circa) two Japanese POW Postal Cards to Shropshire, one with 'Malai' cachet in violet & both with unusual square han of Takahashi in red, both with British censor in rosine, minor or more significant blemishes. The camp was about 45km W of Palmbang, which itself is about 100km from the E coast of Sumatra. 1433 PSE imageRANTAUPRAPAT INTERNMENT CAMP: 1945 (Apr 21) Japanese flimsy postal card for Internees endorsed on the reverse "Kamp Rantau Prapat" with superb han of Iwamoto, to the women's camp at Brastagi. Superb. David Tett in Volume Two at page 196 states "Mail to the POWs in Sumatra is rare, and to the civilians interned there, extremely rare": illustrated Volume 2 p219. From Baron EH Six van Osterleek, of a noble Dutch family, to his wife. Rantauprapat is 80km inland from the north coast of Sumatra & 300km due W of Malacca. 1436 PSE imageSUMATRA DEATH RAILWAY (PAKAN BAROE CAMP 6 at SOENGEIPAGAR): 1943 (Feb) Australian Red Cross envelope with red obliterating bar at the base to a "Sgt Pilot" in Malaya, redirected from Changi endorsed "Cha/SUM/7.44" and at upper-left "Recd 30.10.44", han of Asanamura, minor rust-stains at the base. With lengthy letter dated "Feb 7th 1943" & written on both sides of the page (as was permitted until -.9.1943). 1440 PSE imageSUMATRA DEATH RAILWAY (PAKAN BAROE): 1943 (July 2) Australian Red Cross envelope with solid obliterating bar at the base, to a RAAF corporal on Java but redirected to "Pakan/Baroe", censor in violet & han of Asanamura in scarlet, minor imperfections & blue stain at upper-left. Ex David Tett: sold for HK$780. Illustrated in Volume Two at page 179. Mail to or from Australians on the Death Railway is rare. By mid-1944, the Japanese had transported 6600 POWs from around the region to complete the rail link across the Sumatran Highlands between Pakan Baroe & Moeara, a distance of 220km. They were mostly British & Dutch but about 300 were a mix of Americans, Australians & New Zealanders. Conditions were appalling and more than 700 died during the project, which was completed 15.8.1945, the day Japan surrendered. It was only ever used for transporting POWs. Included is a hand-drawn map showing the 13 camp locations along the route. However, all mail was processed through Pakan Baroe. (Image1) (Image2)
