1402 PSE imageBANDOENG (CAMP WM): 1945 (Aug 2) Japanese POW Postal Card with address details in English & Malay endorsed "Java WM - 1",  from an American sailor to his mother, Indian-pattern 'RAF POST 8/30.SEP.45/S.E.ASIA' cds, the reverse with New York arrival of OCT15/1945, '.../RETURNED TO BLVD STA' cds of 18.10.1945 & 'Not in Directory/Boulevard Station/CANNOT BE FOUND' cachet both in purple, "Broome County" added to address with a further New York backstamp of 20.10.1945, unusually fine. Petty Officer Lowell Swartz survived the sinking of USS 'Houston' in the Battle of the Sunda Straits on 1.3.1942. Most of the survivors were sent to work on the Burma-Thailand Railway, but Swartz apparently remained on Java. (Image1) (Image2)

Rare: David Tett records only one other item from Australia to an internee. Captain JS Winter was captured on Timor & a letter of 18.6.1943 was addressed to him there. In the intervening two months it was learned in Australia that he had been moved to Java.
