1878 full letter headed "Port Moresby Anuapala July 28 1878" and signed on the reverse "Ruatoka", the letter believed written in
the Motuan language, some reinforcing along folding-splits but of strong colour & wholly legible, endorsed on the reverse "Letter written by a native of Rarotonga the son of a savage & cannibal". A very early and important social history document,
that predates by seven years the establishment of civil administration in BNG. Ex Rev Roger Lee.
Ruatoka was born in the Cook Islands to Christian converts. His mission work in Papua began in 1873. He also acted as an interpreter for the English missionaries & went on several expeditions into the interior. Ruatoka was one of four early
missionaries featured on PNG's 1972 Christmas stamp issue. (Image1) (Image2)

1888 British 1d pink lettersheet with printed 'GOVERNMENT HOUSE' in blue on the flap & within where endorsed "British New Guinea"
and signed "Basil Thomson", to "The Archbishop of York" (the sender's father) carried per favor to England where placed into the mails with very fine London squared-circle of NO19/88 & 'YORK/NO20/88' arrival backstamp, very minor blemishes. Ex Rev
Roger Lee - acquired in 1983 for $800 - who states "Earliest known outgoing cover from BNG", making this an extremely important item.
The marvellous letter states: "...I arrived here...after a terrible passage...There is a rush of miners for Gold so fearing trouble with the natives we take an armed party inland tomorrow. I have the use of the Govt Camera a
beautiful...instrument...this letter will go from Downing Street. Do not be astonished if you receive one tame cassowary..."!!! Remarkably, the gold reference "inland" can't be to the recent discoveries on the islands to the east of Samarai, that are
generally believed to be the first in Papua. (Image1) (Image2)

skirmish with other natives]...the Governor shot a man who was just going to thrust an ugly looking spear through me...I hate having to shoot these poor savages even in self-defence...I received all your letters today forwarded from Fiji...". Ex Rev
