1022 E image1990 Transport Definitives stamp-size photographic essays for four 41c designs affixed to an essay for the intended First Day Cover, discoloured from exposure to sunlight still fully legible. With the piece of artboard from which it has become detached. The island's Philatelic Bureau was closed on 2.3.1993 and, according to Bruce Haynes, "...all files & other records were dumped on the roadside for removal to the rubbish tip. A few files & artwork were souveniered by a local." Thank goodness for that! The four designs were issued as 1c Phosphate Tractor, 3c Diesel Railcar, 10c Trishaw & $5 Steam Locomotive. From the famous "Darling Correspondence". Bousteads were Singapore agents for the Christmas Island Phosphate Co, which owned the TSS 'Islander' that made regular visits to both Christmas & Cocos Islands. 1031 c image1934 (Feb 24) social cover to Sweden with 12c ultramarine tied by unusually fine and clear strike of 32mm 'CHRISTMAS ISLAND/ + ' cds with larger cross at the base (Proud D6b), flap removed, minor blemishes & repaired corner fault at upper-right. Ted Proud's Type D6 includes two separate datestamps. The first, of 31mm diameter, is recorded between 18.4.1929 & the early-1930s. It was replaced by a very similar cds of 32mm diameter, with a slightly larger cross at the base, of which the earliest usage noted by us is of 26AU/1933. David Flaat's long commercial cover of that date sold at our auction of 22.2.2013 for $2990. 1035 c image1940 (Feb 6) social cover to a Malay resident "co Messrs Ong Boon Tat & Co/Christmas Island" with 4d Koala tied by 'WAIKERIE/SA' cds, superb 'V'-in-circle censor handstamp indicating the letter was not opened & poor boxed 'PASSED BY/ 15 /CENSOR' handstamp applied at Singapore, light overall soiling. Stated by Bruce Haynes to be "the only recorded inwards wartime mail". [On 11.3.1942, Indian troops on the island mutinied & killed the one officer & four British troops remaining there. 1040 c image1958 three social covers from island residents to Western Australia with Singapore Ships 12c (surface), 50c (airmail) or 50c x2 (airmail double-rate) each tied by the new 29mm 'CHRISTMAS ISLAND' cds. From 1.1.1958 until 30.9.1958, a period of only nine months, the island had the status of a separate Crown Colony.
