989 c image1859 (Nov 21) entire to "Philadelphia/Pennsylvania" with the lengthy letter headed "Running Creek Saw Mills near Melbourne" and signed "Thos B Swift", Queen-on-Throne Rouletted 6d pair with faint BN '1' of Melbourne (backstamp of DE1/59) & tied by 'STEAMSHIP/ 10 ' handstamp of New York, minor blemishes. Ex Dale Forster who concluded that it was carried trans-Pacific to Panama, across the isthmus by rail, then by ship to New York: a rare routing. [We have never encountered the Running Creek Saw Mill and online searches were fruitless. The letter indicates it was located at Kew, about 5km E of Melbourne] (Image1) (Image2) (Image3) (Image4) (Image5)

991 D image1871 (Jan-June) bound volume of 'The Australasian (Country Edition)' weekly broadsheet newspaper, 24 issues each originally posted from Ballarat to nearby "Napoleons" most still with Laureate 1d affixed alongside the address but some with no stamp indicating they were enclosed in mailing bands, some condition concerns and a few minor repairs with archival tape noted but generally the pages throughout are very fine. Rare postal history and fabulous social history. Lengthy articles on all manner of subjects but the most exciting element is the illustrated advertising that is sprinkled liberally through all issues and that provides terrific insights into the life of the colonists, their homes and their entertainments. Published 1864-1946 in Melbourne. Weighs 10kg. [One unposted issue is currently listed online for US$185] (Image1) (Image2) (Image3) (Image4) (Image5) (Image6) (Image7)
