1162 c image1875 (July 10) 'Riverina' cover to Scotland with NSW De La Rue 1d orange-red x2 tied by Rays '137' and Victoria Bell 2d x3 tied by BN '1' "killer" of Melbourne, the reverse with NSW cds of 'MOSSGIEL', 'BOOLIGAL' & 'HAY, Melbourne transit of JY14/75 & Edinburgh arrival of SP23/75. Ex Trevor Davis. This is Number 51 in Geoff Kellow's Census of 57 'Riverina' covers: see 'Sydney Views' (August 2004). The listing is not actually numbered: this is the first cover on page 14. It is the only 'Riverina' cover from Mossgiel.

1163 c image1876 (Apr 18) cover with advertising on the flap for 'CJ & T Ham/Auctioneers House/Land & Estate Agents/45 Swanston St/.../Established/1853', to Wiltshire "via Brindisi" with Bell 9d brown/pink tied by fine Melbourne duplex, 'CHIPPENHAM/JU3/76' arrival backstamp, repaired tear across the flap hardly detracts from the beautifully engraved text. Ex Rod Moreton and Dale Forster. Thomas Ham was the engraver of the Half-Lengths and Recess Queen-on-Throne 2d. [See also Lot 3360 for an 1856 letter from him]

1164 c image1880 (Dec) use of wrapper with printed 'The Argus/(Newspaper Only)' at the top, to Ohio "Via San Francisco" with Bell 1d green tied by a superb part-strike of the scarce 'EXHI[BITION]/VICTORI[A]' cds, very fine strike of the worn 'PAID/ALL' handstamp in purple, two small repaired tears. Ex Dale Forster, who states the handstamp was used only on Penny Rate Printed Matter, three recorded on wrappers and one on a newspaper: see Lot 245.

1165 long cover image1882 (Sep 25) cover with faint Italian Consulate at Melbourne cachet on the flap, to Rome "Via Brindisi" with rare & remarkable franking of Bell 1d & 1/- x4 + Naish 2d brown x2 tied by 'killer' cancels '1' of Melbourne with double-oval 'REGISTERED/MELBOURNE' datestamp below, 'ROMA/RACCOM' arrival backstamp, roughly opened with two repaired tears & slightly truncated at the ends. Not listed in Ben Palmer's Census. The rate was 7d per ½oz x7 + 4d registration = 53d = 4/5d.

1167 c image1887 (March 11) double-rate cover to England endorsed "Per Carthage" with scarce franking of Naish 6d blue horizontal pair tied by Melbourne duplex cancel, London arrival backstamp of AP 8/87 in red, plus mourning envelope from two months earlier to Glasgow "Per Liguria" with the more usual franking of Astley 6d blue tied by 'ST KILDA RY STN/JA 7/87/VIC - MC/24' duplex & arrival backstamp of FE12/87, both with a few minor blemishes. The ship-letter rate was 6d per ½oz.  (2)

1169 c image1893 (Aug 8) cover with embossed 'BUCKLEY & NUNN/MELBOURNE' on the tucked-in flap, intended to be sent at the 1d Printed Matter rate to Narracoorte (South Australia) but unstamped, the inter-colonial address overlooked at the GPO where a largely very fine strike of the rare 'DETAINED FOR/1 PENNY POSTAGE' handstamp applied and initialled, 21mm 'DEAD LETTER OFFICE' backstamp of the same day in magenta. The Printed Matter rate was ½d within Victoria and 1d to the other colonies.

1170 c image1896 (Jan 8) Government Botanist OHMS envelope with pre-printed 'CHIEF SECRETARY/FRANK/ [arms]/STAMP/VICTORIA' at upper-right, addressed in the distinctive hand of Ferdinand Mueller to the Director of the Botanic Garden, Calcutta, India with 2½d red/yellow added alongside the Frank tied by Melbourne cds, Tuticorin transit and '... BOTANIC GARDEN/FE 4' arrival backstamps, minor defects. The Frank was valid only for mail within Australia; stamps were required for overseas sendings.

1172 c image1902 (Nov 5) Gollin & Company Merchants envelope to India with 5d brown & 6d green tied by largely fine 'ENGLISH MAIL T.P.O.' duplex cancel used on mail posted directly onto the Melbourne-Adelaide train to catch steamers en route, 'TUTICORIN/20NO/02' transit and Calcutta arrival backstamp of 25NO02, a couple of minor blemishes. The rate was 2½d overseas letter + 6d late fee for an article posted after 3pm at Spencer Street Railway Station (posted anywhere else in Melbourne, the mail would not catch that day's train to Adelaide).

1173 c image1905 (Feb) registered to England with 3d orange, 5d brown & 1/- yellow tied by 'R'-in-circle of Melbourne, London arrival backstamp of 9 MAR05 & partial crowned circle in violet on the face, closed tear & repaired corner fault at upper-left clear of the adhesives & markings, back flap missing. The rate was overseas letter 2½d per ½oz x2 + 3d registration + 1/- late fee for an article posted at the GPO after 12.45pm. A rarely seen usage of the 'maximum' late fee, which was in force until uniform late fees for overseas letters were introduced in 1907.

1179 # image1854-55 Lithographs 4d blue SG 3a with Tau Symbol (Inverted 'T') in the margin below the 'P' of 'PENCE' [R5/1], margins close to large, Cat £450++. A rare & little-known variety of great technical interest. Ex Dr Cecil Walkley (sold at our auction of 14.4.2005 for $640) and 'Dubois' (I): sold for SFr440. [The tau marks were a guide on the stone for positioning the frame around the swan vignette. After the frames were positioned, the taus were removed, except for that below position 5/1]
