1385 image1852 Scinde Dawk ½a white embossed on thin machine-made paper SG S1 with strong & clear impression, cut-square with large even margins, tied to small piece by indistinct circular cancel in black, minor discoloration at upper-left not affecting the design, Cat £3,000. The 'Scinde Dawk' were the first stamps issued anywhere in Asia. They were produced under the authority of Sir Bartle Frere of the East India Company, who in 1850 became Chief Commissioner of Sindh Province in north-west India (part of present-day Pakistan). The name derives from an anglicised spelling of "Dak", the Hindustani word for "Post". Originally embossed in red on a wax wafer - which had a tendency to crack - these were soon replaced with colourless & blue embossings on paper. They were withdrawn in -.10.1854.
