Robe PO renamed from Guichen Bay -.6.1847. 2082 c image1861 (March 25) cover to "S Servan/Ille & Vilaine/France" endorsed "pr Overland Mail/Via Marseille" above 'CIRCIER HAWKE & Co/ADELAIDE' cachet in blue (obscured by docketing) with Perkins Bacon Rouletted 6d dull violet-blue SG 28 tied by GPO cds in blue, light French 'AUSTRALIE/11/MAI/61/V SUEZ...' cds in red on the face & rated '5' (decimes), on the reverse fair transits of Paris & Rennes and 'ST SERVAN' arrival cds. The via Marseille rate was 1/1d per ½oz (reduced to 8d from 1.4.1862). However, if carried per French mailboat from Egypt, as here, the rate was only 6d, the same as by the Long Sea Route to Southampton. St Servan is some 1100km NW of Marseilles.

2083 c image1861 (July) cover to Scotland "Via Marseilles" with Perkins Bacon Rouletted 9d slate-violet, faint Diamond Numeral cancel & unframed 25mm 'OVERLAND CORNER/S.A' cds (rated RRRRR; LRD by almost two years) alongside and two faint South Australian backstamps, Edinburgh transit & 'PRESTON PANS' arrival backstamps both of OC17/61, docketed on the face "Adelaide 17 July 61/Received 17 Sept/see explanation on back of this" where this lengthy endorsement appears: "This letter was received at the General Post Office Adelaide previous to the departure of the July mail but by an error in the office was unfortunately detained/CH Lewis/Postmaster General", a bit aged & opened-out for display. A most unusual item of 'interrupted' mail. Don Pearce has advised that 300 letters - probably three bundles of 100 - were detained in this manner. The endorsement was painstakingly written 300 times by the unfortunate clerk who was responsible (or scapegoated), then signed by PMG Lewis. Only one other example has been recorded.

Strathalbyn (2) PO 5.1.1846. Brighton PO 25.10.1849. A very early telegraph item from South Australia; the original Adelaide-Port Adelaide line having opened only in 1855.

2085 c image1862 (Jan 25) part-entire signed "Wm Younghusband & Co", to London but amended to "Calcutta" & shipping endorsement changed to "per Northam", rare franking of Perkins Bacon Rouletted 9d grey-lilac & 1/- yellow SG 34 & 38 tied by GPO cds (UFM-3; ERD and with unrecorded code '7'), Calcutta arrival backstamp of MA1/1862 in red, central vertical filing fold otherwise very fine. Rare, very colourful & attractive. The item was reported in 'Shilling Violet' (Mar 1996) where it was stated that "the 1/9d rate represents a double weight rate (2x6d) plus a late fee of 9d...The late fee paid for the letter's inclusion in a supplementary mail departing from Glenelg. This met the passing steamer after it had left Port Adelaide". Only six covers with the Shilling Yellow have been recorded. Superior to the similarly franked cover to England in Don Pearce (II) that sold for $4720. See also Lots 2090 and 2096.

On 1.4.1857, the inter-colonial rate was doubled from 3d to 6d. [William Younghusband arrived in June 1840. He was a promoter of the Murray River Steam Navigation Co. An MLC, he was also a very effective Chief Secretary 1857-60. The letter speaks at length of the complete lack of interest in new land offerings, and states "... We have a difficulty in offering you any advice as to removing to Adelaide. We do not know what you would be giving up ..."]

[Marrabel was 23km N of Kapunda: PO 1861. Martin Walker states that John Brewster was PM at Kapunda 1857-58, then a gap to WH Darwin 1867-73. This cover reveals that Mr Darwin was PM from at least -.9.1862]

[Robert Parr was the pound-keeper at Apoinga on the Burra. The Royal Mining Co mined copper intermittently between 1851 & 1861. The letter states "This is all the inventory and Tools I could find at the Royal Mine" - the list having been removed - & suggests operations had been wound-up. Emanuel Solomon was transported to Sydney in 1818 for larceny. After obtaining his ticket of leave, he moved in 1838 to Adelaide where he became a very successful businessman, property developer & auctioneer. He is regarded as the principal founder of the Adelaide Hebrew Congregation]

The Handbook rates the numeral as "C(ommon)" but it was used at Redruth only until 1863, when the office was elevated to a PO & Diamond Numeral '187' was received. In fact, this cover is the only cover proving the use of '6' at Redruth in the Receiving House period, making this a very significant item.
