Postally used examples are much scarcer than CTO stamps and, in our opinion, are significantly undervalued. An apparent late use, but the Thin Paper £1 is reported not to have been issued until 1921.

Melb' red/white R label alongside, to illustrated envelope (210x134mm) with an image of Charles Kingsford Smith & the 'Southern Cross' plane plus a list of his 1927-30 record flights, maps of Australia, England & USA and pre-printed "LF Allen, Poste Restante, GPO NSW" address, flown by Kingsford Smith in the 'Southern Moon' to Sydney AAMC #180 with 'KINGSFORD SMITH COMMEMORATIVES/FIRST FLOWN COVERS/PILOTED BY COMMODORE KINGSFORD SMITH' oval cachet in violet on face, small closed tear at top & a few minor blemishes, Cat $325 (postmarked 19.3.1931). The stamps were officially issued on 19.3.1931. The ACSC states "A first day cover is known postmarked 18 March 1931 at Elizabeth Street, Melbourne". Frank Pauer advises that a few examples are known, all on covers flown early the next morning.
